I really like the point about not including so much detail that it obscures your subject. That in particular can be tough for me!

How I go about drawing hair is similar, but first drawing the hair in masses, in one big abstract shape, then getting the ribbons, breaking it down into medium shapes, then the details, but not to much, only on the areas that I want the eye to look at.
