Emacs Has Builtin Chat :) Those Other IDEs Don't :(

One of the benefits of using Emacs is that it has so many useful tools built into it, including a nice IRC client that allows you to chat within Emacs. This could be useful if you need to ask a help/support question related to the project you are working on. Or maybe you just want to get away from your work for a bit and relax with some chat.

Thank you for the shoutout Derek! Hope everyone enjoys the IRC channel! Keep up the great work man, you're the one person that makes Emacs actually appealing. But for now, I will remain a loyal Vim user - for now.. 😄

I believe Twitch chat uses IRC as well, or some form of it. Most clients, specially web, hide this by having a fancy GUI, but there's this minimalist twitch chat client called Chatty that shows it.

Emacs isn't a IDE. It's a text based desktop environment

btw one small tip
give a try to emacs-nativecomp available in official arch repo instead of vanilla emacs
basically it has native compilation which is supposed to make emacs more faster and responsive
( on emacs don't forget to do doom upgrade, doom sync and doom build once)

Emacs. An editor that has its own nifty OS also attached 🤣 TBH, Derek, I've been a Vi/Vim user (victim?) who has _shunned_ Emacs for _decades_ -- but you're slowly bringing me round 😀

Why do you need emacs when you have a shell. It has a number of "extensions". irssi & weechat for irc, vim for text editing, mpc for music, tmux for multiplexing, vifm/nnn/ranger for file-management etc.

I can't wait till Emacs becomes a kernel unto itself.

Hey, DT! Is there a way to try out Vim and Emacs distros and derivatives as we do with Linux distros in VirtualBox, for example?

Now we need to extend Emacs to support the Matrix protocol…

I feel like emacs should just become a distro already. But I sort of find it funny that the only OS on the planet that pholosophically opposed to app bloat and feature creep has the strange and unique beast that is Emacs, an application that pretends it is an OS

This makes me wonder, was this a feature in Lisp machines? I should look up what these things were.

Idk why but emacs reminds me of acme from Plan9

Personally, I prefer "best of breed" apps that do one thing and do it well, however something like emacs is really nice if you are stuck in a terminal attached to a server and running separate apps is not realistic. Screen and tmux are cool but having the power of emacs would be my choice if I was in university today and had to do all my work in a serial terminal as I did when I went to school. Then again, I don't know if a serial terminal would be capable of all of this. I presume it would assuming all the character sets are there but it's been a LONG time since I sat in front of one.

DT, I think you should be using Emacs on an iMac, eating a McChicken at MacDonalds, while talking about Emacs like a donald duck :)
(I'm just trying to string a bunch of variables with the same 'string' - in this case "Mac" and "Mc" )

This erc is a great package! That's what I use to connect to IRC.

Gee, Emacs is still in use. I used it a lot in the 1980's, later only sporadically. I really don't remember the commands anymore.

I love IRC, I use irssi, got it set up the way I like it. Good to know emacs has one built in!

I installed Arch yesterday!
Yes it's irrelevant.

emac appimage did not work on arch linux, some .so library not exist.

Emacs is an operating system, plus if you're desperate enough you could probably get chat in stuff like vim or vscode
