"I was raised in a traditional family where I was always told, 'Don't underestimate the blessings of your elders!' And so, be it any event, a festival or even my exams, I always made sure to take their blessings. This value slowly turned into a habit of me visiting old age homes in my college days. I'd visit them every once in a while. Seeing those faces light up seeing me- it was a priceless feeling. I'd listen to those uncles & aunties talk about their lives, their kids & how those kids abandoned them. I'd feel sad. All I could do was lend them an ear. But as time passed, I got busy. Exams, internships & then jobs. I had no time. But the thought of those uncles & aunties never left me. That's why, when last month, I was planning my birthday, I decided to do something that always made me happy- visit an old age home. I was now living in a new area & so, a friend helped me find a local old age home. But I wanted to do something personal this time; I decided to make kheer. I spoke to the authorities, asked about everyone's medical conditions, spoke to Ma & made sugar free kheer. I even ordered a sugar free cake! But though the cake & kheer were sugar free, the uncles & aunties were extra sweet! They were SO happy to see me! Together, we cut the cake & ate kheer. Everyone said, 'Kya mast banaya hai!' Mera ussi se pet bhar gaya! I received so much love that day... In fact, one uncle, Kanti lal kept mistaking me for his daughter. But you know, I played along. I was grateful that I could give him that happiness even for a short while. But it also made me wonder, 'What if something were to ever happen to Papa? How will I manage things?' That question kept me up for nights. But honestly, for now, I just want to focus on the present & visit these old age homes more often. I mean, that day, there was so much happiness around us. What if this is done by more people, more often? I wonder how much sorrow can we bring down together? We can't change their lives. But we can make an effort to take out a few hours for them. The world has enough hate in it. All we need is love. And if one good deed at a time can make this world a better place, then why not act on it?"
