I have those yellow straps and, while you are correct that the metal mechanism is pretty reliable, I had one fail in the worst possible way: The stitching came undone on the end that retained the hook. Cheap is cheap. Still looking for a strap that I would trust without a backup. These ain't it.

Good design.  I use carabiners too.  I followed your link to Amazon, but it doesn't say what their rated strength is (how many lbs. can they hold down).  It's an issue for me because the bike is 440+ lbs.

Can someone tell me why he has a caraibener on the end of the yellow strap. The way that works is the shorter strap that ha sa hook goes on the handle bars and the longer strap with the hook goes on the trailer. Then the other end of that strap has a handle made into it that you pull down with to tighten it up and then tie off the excess. But he has a carabiner attached to that. why? Either he uses that to anchor to the trailer and then pulls down with the hook, but then he has to tie that off with the hook atached? It seems pointless but surely he is doing something i cant think of but i cant think of anything that makes sense to have a hook or a cariberner flapping around hitting the bike or whatever. If he uses the caribener then why not cut the hook off the other end? What am i missing?

I've been using the black retractable ones like you showed (Erickson brand I think?) for about a year and a half with no issues. I suppose the only 'problem' was that they were sorta hard to get the red release button to press in, but that was probably just because I had them for about 10 years before I started using them for hauling my dirt bike cause I sprayed a little white lithium grease on the ratchet mechanism and they've been super smooth and easy to use ever since. Hope they don't give me any issues, especially since I just saw that Walmart sells 2 packs of them. That's a good idea with the caribineers bypassing the hooks, cause from time to time my hooks will slip out of the anchor points on my truck when I'm sitting on the bike arranging the handlebar hooks haha, but never had one slip out while the bike is tightened down for transportation -- perhaps because my bike's forks can't compress any more because I use a Fork Buddy/brace.

So you made it hard to find the link. Which link is it?

I now disagree. Using the eye to make a loop is the best way.

Those chain links are not carabiners and aren't meant to be used like that. I would agree that cam buckles are a good choice for tie downs on a motorcycle tie downs. This one from US Cargo Control is $6.29
