This dance uses Vietnamese folk music style that originated in the northern region of Vietnam. The song poetically describe a woman as she waits for her love to return—through images of water fern, clouds, wind, birds, and fish. This style of music was first recorded back in the 13th century, and the repertoire focuses on topics of love and sentimentality. In 2009, this style of Vietnamese folk music was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
