I love how Madhuri was able to capture the entire spectrum of her character's emotions in just 5 minutes. Chandramukhi loved Devdas unconditionally, she waited for him, constantly worried about him, appreciated him for who he was. It sucked that she fell for him so hard, and so fast, only to be left alone and her love remained unrequited.. after all, Devdas loved Paro all the way till his death. Chandramukhi was a good distraction, but it wasn't enough to fill the void in his heart. So tragic, yet so beautiful.

I started to watch Indian programmes on a Sunday morning when i was about sixteen. There was a series on U.K. Television called Mahabarat, which i was addicted to, although i never understood the significance of the white telephone! Then I delved into Bhangra, then Bollywood films. Devdas was my favourite, and still is, even though I'm now 54, and a long time away from when i first saw the film. The sheer beauty, the costumes, the colours, the music and the sadness of the story, all of that still...enthralls me. The genre seems to encapsulate the glamour of old Hollywood, in a time when glamour is sorely missing in the lacklustre film industry we have today. Sheer glorious escapism. Love it!
