CATAMARAN DESIGN FLAW REVEALED - Cracked bulkhead repair series - Part 9 (Episode 114)

Показать описание
Colin finally gives his opinion on the Lagoon 450 design flaw involving the weak bulkhead. Too many Lagoon 450's have contacted him with exactly the same failure, for him to rule out there being a design flaw anymore, as the count is over 20 boats, and counting. Boats that have never been through a hurricane, never run aground, never had their rigs over tensioned, are falling victim to the failure, which costs tens of thousands of dollars to repair, so it must be time for Lagoon to step up to the plate and do something about this now...

This series will show never before seen footage of how we straightened and strengthened a 45ft production catamaran, in order to be able to complete a circumnavigation. Located in Linton bay, in Panama, we meet our fair share of challenges trying to rebuild this boat from the bulkheads up...

Those who have commented that you are milking these repairs to stretch out content have never done this kind of work on a boat. I can understand this line of repair videos not being interesting to some folks, but I am enjoying them and the last thing you want to do is rush this work.

The one take away I have after watching your journey from the beginning and being a Parlay Patreon for so long is that you are a professional in every sense of the word. Your knowledge, skill, attention to detail, research, education, charity, and (these two are a big ones) diplomacy and ethics show through in everything you do. Every week you just reinforce why I’m proud to support your adventures.

Colin, you makes us proud of our trade, as Marine Engineers. We were taught to think, not only to remember. Great videos and lessons!

Do you know Collin, you and Jamie should seriously consider writing a book about how to repair a boat properly. I'll bet you will have a best seller on your hands.

There seems to be two loving couples on Parley you have Jamie and Sylvia two lovebirds and Colin and Peel Ply another loving couple :)

All of a sudden everyone and their brother is an expert in how to repair cracked bulkheads on a Lagoon 450. Please, let Colin come up with his own plan & sit back and enjoy watching Jaime and him execute them.

One old glass layer trick is to mix however much you need, then separate it in tiny paper (edit: paper cups because you can tear them apart and take all the glue out) cups and put them into a cooler, picking one cup as you go. It's not freezing cold (which can damage the stuff) but it's cold enough to retard the chemical reaction, thus giving you enough time to finish a large glue up job without fear of dipping for another round and finding rock in your bucket. :)

Interesting to see how many Lagoon 450's have come up for sale recently!

Every bit of epoxy and glass that goes on is so satisfying. I would not get too hung up about what Lagoon does or doesn't do about this. If they want to make nice and send you a check thats great but if they don't I would just press on and fix the boat as you perceive it must be fixed. There is going to be a point where the decision is whether to cruise the world or get involved fixing other Lagoons. I say stick to your plan, complete the repair, build some cabinetry and get cruising. You've earned it Colin.

Will be glad to see the wrap-arounds - ties the strength together and will eliminate possibilities of separating on compressive loading. GREAT JOB. I was an Engineering Test Analyst at NASA, and later a Quality Engineer in the Nuclear Industry. You are employing the very best strategy to ensure a very long life on your boat. Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming.

Those bulkheads are solid! Let it be known that from this day forward, Collin shall have a nickname of "Epoxy-Head"

Try taking the peel ply off in the dark there's a static light show that's quite remarkable

I repaired the poorly-done and cracked factory bulkhead tabbing on my 30 year old Apache 37. She is now 53, and we've had 23 years of a nice strong boat, no more creaking, and many beautiful sails to Maine and the Bahamas. You guys are an inspiration and a great lesson for any older boat owner.
For filleting, I used long 45 degree, triangular strips of structural foam, an alternative to cabosil. In those pre-youtube days, I used the excellent West Systems "Fiberglas Boat Repair & Maintenance" and Don Casey's "This Old Boat" to teach me how.

Best rebuild series going on you tube right now!! I love y’all’s attitudes and work ethic. Collin is a real badass and no doubt he could probably rebuild a spaceship if he had to. Nice work guys! Love your channel and I love this series. Thank you for all the extra time you put into recording and editing so that we can go on this journey with you without getting epoxy in our hair!!
