There is a little boy, walking in deep snow.
He is walking in the footprints where the boots of his father, who is right in front of him, had, shortly before, been.
Eventually, the boy gets used to the snow, and runs off, away from the trail that his father made.
And he loves it.
He loves it at first.
In a matter of seconds, he realises the true depth of the snow.
What had once brought great joy now paralyses him.
His legs are now completely cemented in the snow, little more than a meter away from the path of footprints that his father had left him.
The more he tried to excavate himself, the more of his body became covered by the snow.
As quickly as it happens, his father hears the boy’s cry for help, even though the boy never called out at all.
The boy feels a strong, gentle hand under his arm. Then another. His father is lifting him up out of the snow.
It feels to the little boy as though he is flying.
Soon he returns to the ground, following his father’s footprints once again.
Further on, he might forget how deep the snow is and repeat the act of trying to forge his own path.
This happens many times.
Every time, he gets stuck.
Every time, his father picks him up and brings him back to the path that the child could never have made for himself.
Finally, the boy gets tired, and his father carries him, sleeping, the rest of the way.
Hours later, the boy wakes up in a warm cabin, wishing he had just asked his father to carry him the whole way.
