I tried this and it worked. Just be aware that when you remove the cap from the hot water, you only have a few seconds to get it done because the plastic hardens again. Just repeat the process if you don’t get it right the first few times.

Ah. So that's how my grandmother (who never drank) had a plastic rum bottle that was sealed, that was full of high-proof moonshine. Yes, my grandmother never drank. She came from a time when even non-drinkers would keep alcohol in their houses for guests who did imbibe.
And yes, I stole that moonshine, thinking it was white rum. I was a kid. I regret it... slightly.
