Michael Marder — Being Neophyte

Показать описание
Michael Marder (University of Basque Country)
In this talk, I will explore the senses of the term 'neophyte,' which spans the plant kingdom as well as the religious and professional human realms. This word will be our guiding star in reflections on the problems of beginnings and deformalization, commitments and randomness, initiation practices and
violence, renewal and novelty. While paying close attention to divergences between human and plant neophytes, I will ultimately draw a connection between natural and political phenomena in dialogue with Hannah Arendt's thinking on natality. The conclusions may be surprising: rather than re-naturalize or domesticate human subjects and communities, the model of ecological neophytes will reveal a constitutive alienness, which may be the precondition for any renewal and regeneration.
