My favorite colors to work with are shades of blue. But I love working with french Ultramarine blue the most. I think it is so vibrant and vivid and pleasing to the eye.

Really helpful tutorial. About the best I’ve seen—and I’ve seen a LOT!

Your talent is amazing, and frankly, a little discouraging to someone at my stage of learning. But I’ll keep banging away at it.

Great work 🙂 Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Definitely one of my fav Youtube channels, Thank You!!!! Your work is amazing and the edition of every video is incredible.... I would wish to watch every video with a slow motion option to try to catch better the whole technique.

Hi Carrie happy new year :) I am a beginner in the watercolors i just love almost any time of art but i felt in love with watercolors. About a year or so i started to see videos in the youtube and be inspired. I just need to say that i LOVE your videos ... are so artistic, very well appealing and you explain very well indeed. Congrats and keep doing this :)

Excellent video. I have always been a graphite and colored pencil artist, with pastels occasionally, but have lately been interested in trying watercolors. This is one of the better how to videos I have seen on the subject.

Now THIS is a GREAT TUTORIAL ON BACKGROUNDS WITH WATERCOLOR!! I love the two channels!! Girley, ya did such a fabulous job teaching this! I love your teaching style, it works!!! Many other YouTuber's watercolor artist's don't know how to teach which makes it so difficult to learn from them. I have to watch them for hours and slow the video speed down to understand. I'm not a newbie artist, I'm an advanced artist with oil and acrylics switching over to the watercolor medium for my artwork. Thanks so much for caring, listening and truly helping all of us out here in YouTube land who're trying to learn!! Truly, thank you!! Hugz, Tree

Another method that you actually did but didn't mention is that warm colors tend to push forward while cool colors tend to fall back. A professor came in to my art class once and taught us about oil painting and color theory. He told us to start with white and a warm and cool color before adding other colors to our paintings one by one. It was crazy how much depth he could add to a portrait with a blank background and only two hues by adding a bit of the cool color to the background.

I love payne's grey. It's my favorite watercolor shade...I don't know why...it just is.

I like the same pallett that you lean towards. The blues, yellows, violets. Thanks, Carrie!

Carrie, you have such a gentle and encouraging way of explaining things. It's delightful. I find myself creating in oranges and reds again and again.

Hi! I'm just a highschool student and I recently picked up watercolor. I have been watching your videos a lot lately(at school/ home when I'm supposed to be doing productive things haha) to actually understand what I'm doing. I just got gifted some watercolor paint and I really like working with blue as its just so calming. I love your art and how you teach, so keep doing what you're doing <3 thanks!

Highlights are SUPER important in creating depth, especially because tone is probably one of the most powerful tools in our arsonal. One other factor that affects me in particular, since I often use ink for the lineart of my paintings, is line width. In general, darker and thicker lines tend to bring an item closer to the front of a piece and also help contribute to the overall layered feeling of the piece! Loving your tips, and your super cute ink thumbnail layouts are so charming!

I've been enjoying your videos for quite a while now and have finally made the jump and have paints on the way. Your magical little critters are the reason. Love your commentary throughout the videos - you're so encouraging. Having gotten my BFA in metalsmithing many years ago, I have kept to 3d art. 2d is a whole new way of thinking. Thanks for all of the encouragement and inspiration!!!
