You will learn different practice problems that ask you to calculate for empirical formula from given percent by mass or percent composition of a compound. In the video, you will learn about empirical formula and the steps to calculate empirical formula using our “easy to understand” explanation. -Empirical Formula of a compound shows the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in the compound.
Steps:
1. Assume the sample is 100 grams to convert the percent by mass to the gram.
2. Convert mass to moles
3. Divide each mole by the smallest number of moles
4. If results are in #.5, #. 333, #.25, you must multiple all of the results by 2, 3, or 4 to remove the fraction.
Task 1: A hydrocarbon compound contains 83.6% carbon and 16.4% hydrogen by mass. What is the empirical formula for this hydrocarbon?
Task 2: A hydrocarbon compound contains 75.0% carbon and 25.0% hydrogen by mass. What is the empirical formula for this hydrocarbon?
Task 3: A pure sample of 5.44 grams was analyzed and found to have 2.55 grams of Iron, 1.95 grams of oxygen, and 0.94 grams of phosphorus. What is the empirical formula for this pure substance?
Task 4: A hydrocarbon compound contains Carbon and Hydrogen. A scientist discovered that the compound has 25% hydrogen by mass. What is the empirical formula for this hydrocarbon?
