Tommy Edison, who's been blind since birth, talks with Christine Ha @theblindcook (winner of MasterChef S3), who lost her sight by age 27, to learn the differences between being born blind and becoming blind later in life. Tommy’s blindness is caused by an underdeveloped optic nerve and Christine’s blindness is caused by a rare autoimmune disease called Neuromyelitis Optica.

I would love to see someone who has been blind since birth see for the first time. It must be incredible, magical. I hope it will be possible one day

You can see which one was blind from birth, I think. She "looks" at him when he speaks, but he doesn't "look" at her when she speaks.

What I think is crazy is how he’s smiling. He’s never seen anyone smile in his life yet he’s full of vibrant facial expressions showing how truly natural they are

As someone who lost nearly half their vision at age 14 from optic nerve damage (caused by brain cancer) after having perfect vision, I think would. But unfortunately there are no magical nerve regenerative treatments that exist. But what sight I’ve got is good enough! And I’m very thankful and very fortunate that I have the sight that I do, so don’t come for me because I’m not complaining about a simple fix.

Eye sight, one of the only senses you can effectively turn off.

Thats pretty much my experience with loads of severe food allergies. If I could flip a switch and be able to eat anything, that would be kinda cool, but I would probably keep eating the same things after I tried everything. It is the life I am comfortable with, ya know?

This clip made me feel so blessed and grateful for my sight, I definitely take it for granted like most people.

Love the idea that he can all of a sudden see again but decides "nah this isn't for me" and continues to live as a blind person

I'm legally blind and able to see a great deal. The amount of sacrifice those around me have given in order to help me is amazing. I'm with her and I would take the surgery in a heart beat.

What’s crazy to me. He smiles. His facial expressions are exactly like a normal person and since he’s never been able to see we can know that it isn’t something we learn it’s something we’re born with

He is 100% right. I worked with gene therapists who performed procedures on those with certain types of blindness. Little kids adapt better, but the older you are, the more light becomes bothersome. We had adults (20s, 30s) who said they wish they didn’t do it because the increased light perception bothered them so much.
