It's because you have a natural high cheek bone. So contouring a bit higher will create an illusion of a slim face. I have a similar face structure, so the usual contour doesn't work for me too.
Also contouring is different for different face shapes.

What you're saying is mostly right but the shade you're using goes mostly for bronzing the skin. If you used something ashy and with grey undertone, it wouldn't look that good high on the cheekbones
