Materials for prop builds don't always have to come from the hardware store - they can also come from the coffee aisle. In this video, I'll show you how I made a Victorian-style oil lamp using a recycled bottle and parts around the house.

Reminds me of some gaslight sconces I built for a charity haunt back in the early 2000s. Used water bottles for those. Did the hot glue in silicone molds for the fancy lamp parts.

Hey Derek, great job (as usual)! I have a top tip that might help: when spraying glass to add frost or soot, it works a little better to shoot the inside of the glass, that way the glass keeps it's shine on the outside. In this example, if you shot the white from the bottom to the top through the tube and the black from the top to the bottom, works really well.

It's always amazing to make something out nothing. That's why I love 3D printing so much! I'm pringting a 3D steampunk lamp right now. I think there's 93 pieces. Can't wait!

Great work and imagination, as always!

Seeing you make this and sharing that you were inspired by the shape of the bottle is awesome! Thanks for your videos I always come away with creative ideas.

Very clever and a great use of stuff that might otherwise be thrown away

Wow. Great build, great techniques. Found objects projects are easy on the wallet. PS. Picking up paints for Halloween, got my new favorite color, Caput Mortuum. Can't wait to go overboard with it. ;-).

I would love to see how you research some of these things. Finding references and thinking through how to make them from what you have.

I made a bunch of hanging 'swamp lanterns' awhile back, but the little battery candles weren't really bright enough to shine through the surface treatment, and because they were glass, I couldn't perforate them for electric. Still have them somewhere but don't use them.

Turned out great! I've done similar projects that look good, but not nearly as nice up close.

Haven't really done much with EVA foam, but you've inspired me. Especially knowing I can laser cut it. Great build!

I've been watching your content for a couple of years now and have been too afraid to say it before, but I really admire your courage and determination for making these videos and sharing them even with your disability, especially in a day and age where internet trolls and anon hate are so prevalent.
You're a fabulous artist and I hope to continue watching you work for years to come <3

@6:32 I would recommend using an air brush to put the black "soot" on the inside of the upper rim of the "glass."

Dang that looks great! Do you save all your scraps?? 😅 I'd have never looked at that plastic bottle and thought "hmm this might be a good fake oil lamp prop"
