'We closed your account due to inactivity'

Banks tend to reduce their risk exposure in times of economic distress (banking crisis, recession). An easy way to accomplish this is to reduce outstanding credit lines by closing credit card accounts due to inactivity and to require higher credit scores for the opening of new accounts.

While it is great not to use credit cards and to store them away, make sure to use them occasionally (and to pay them off!) to reduce the likelihood of account closures due to inactivity. Banks are not obligated to provide advance notice for closing an account or to reopen a closed account. A closed account may adversely impact your credit score as it increases your credit utilization and impacts your age of accounts. Accumulated rewards are typically forfeited by account closures.
