Please note: I already have a lathe, but I used this method because its faster.

Lovely ring. I get such a kick out of watching how you come up with solutions to problems. I loved the jig you made to sand the inside.

The hardness, obviously, depends on the grain direction. One way to make a much more durable wooden ring is to use burl wood, such as briar, as the grain doesn't really have one single direction. I have a video up on how I made a couple of briar rings, and they lasted through some pretty hard beatings.

Cool method using the pantograph though, I used a lathe myself.

You have a delightful habit of over-engineering your temporary tools. Fun to see the solutions.

I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos and especially your diversity of content. You know, I just moved into an apartment with barely any tools and even less space. Watching your videos are basically the only dose of woodworking I get. Keep it up, you're doing an awesome job.

I know this is an old video, but my first time seeing it. Sir, you are extraordinary. Not that making a wooden ring is a big deal, but the way you approach problems is just breathtaking. Making a "pantorouter" type thing to cut the blank, making a collet chuck for the drill, the little jig for the belt sander... It's seriously impressive. I would love to buy you lunch and pick your brain for an hour. Kudos man, thanks for the years of inspiration and education.

Always surprising me with clever ideas, you are a great engineer, taking all the work on the tools! Cheers from argentina!

For a second there, I thought you'd _made_ those two rings in a chain, and you were going to leave it to us to puzzle out how you did it.

Clear nail varnish work great on rings and other wood jewellery. Even comes with it's own brush built in.

Other than that super glue can be spread thinly over the wood whilst rotating it. When it hardens it will give a very smooth hard shiny surface.

Matthias, a real good finish for items like this can be made from equal parts beef tallow and beeswax - heat until melted, mix together. Can be kept indefinitely in a small tin (Altoids or similar). This can be used on metal or wood. It IS edible, and you can add a drop or two of spearmint or peppermint oil, makes a great chapstick. It is called "Fixin Wax", and has been used for ages. Oh, also good for candles! Whatever you want beautified or protected, rub it into the surface, then buff off.
Love your ingenuity with all the home-made tools. Seems like sometimes, though, you spend more time on the jigs than you do actually making your objects. Often the case, tho, with all of us!

Did something similar with Lauan from a hollow core door I trimmed down. Started with an incredibly thin strip soaked until pliable, glued, wrapped around a dowel (several layers thick) and clamped with masking tape. All my sanding was done by hand. Since the grain runs the circumference it is incredibly strong. My brother still has it to this day.

Love that device you made for sanding the inside. Most creative!

The wooden "collet" you made to hold the ring is an excellent idea Matthias!

That's amazing! I swear, when I get myself off the ground financial wise, this is what I'm gonna do in my spare time. Wood work and Metal work is so amazing because you can create ANYTHING you want :D

I'm just a beginner, and while overwhelming as this seems right now... especially since I don't have a band saw yet...I can put this in my favorites as I WILL be buying the specs for your pantograph because this is such an amazing idea. I never dreamed I could do such amazing projects... after seeing this, I KNOW I can in the future. thanks so much for your excellent engineering and design and sharing this with anyone who has the initiative to try these projects. initially I just bought a router for fun, now I think I could actually create some real masterpieces and quite possibly earn some extra money and give me a hobbie for retirement years. thanks so much!
