i really like the fact that the normal video mode on the 5 is good for pretty much every brightness level. and that the supernight mode is only the extra tool for really extreme 'no light' scenarios.
thx for this comparison. 👍

This is the exact video I wanted to see. I have the Action 4 and do a lot of low light forest walks. What a HUGE improvement. Thank you!

I'm not sure if it's just me, but for some reason, I get the impression that the Action 5 is sort of over-processed? No doubt the image is brighter in all showcased scenarios but it feels artificial/oversharpened? Also in the shots taken outside, your skin looks more natural on the 4? I am coursious which camera image do you like better Tamara?
Great videos, looking forward to other tests and perhaps the first software patch?

I think it’s also useful to see the difference between the Osmo Pocket 3 and Action 5 Pro mainly for low light condition since this 2 cameras are very good at it.

Thank you so much, Tamara! This is how comparison should be done! You did it in the best way possible. All variants, so easy to compare and see the difference. SuperNight mode is kinda grainy and low-resolution. Personally, I would never use it for video production. But overall, in normal video mode, Action 5 Pro is the king in low light between action cameras! In-door footage is mind-blowing how better A5 became. Amazing how they could get more stops in the same size of the sensor. Can it be beaten by Ace Pro 2? Let's see. And I will watch it on this channel. Thank you again for your amazing work!

The Action 5 SuperNight mode looks a over processed image. You will get a better quality image if you manually set your camera to performe well in this situation. Set a minimum shutter speed of 1/200 (or 1/100), ISO MAX 800 or 1600, D-LOG M, and you will get a good quality video even at night.

I’ve just purchased and started using the Osmo Action 5 Pro. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. THANK YOU DJI❤️!!

I feel like the action 5 is brighter in low light but on account of this, you see more of the grain? If that makes sense. Maybe with some color grading the action 4 can look close to the action 5 pro?

The disparity in low-light performance between the Osmo Action 5 Pro and its predecessor is quite significant. I conducted a side-by-side test in my home, where I have an abundance of neon colored lighting. The Osmo Action 5 Pro excelled, illuminating the room and faithfully capturing the vibrant hues, whereas the Osmo Action 4 struggled, producing an image that was noticeably noisy and dark.

Great video! You're the most practical reviewer for these cameras on this platform. I've come to realize for someone like me who owns both the Action 4 and the Pocket 3, I really don't see a reason to upgrade to the Action 5 pro. Yes, the footage from the 5 looks brighter but it adds some noise, and it overall looks more natural on the 4. Plus, I can always switch to my Pocket 3 as a last resort. It'll be interesting to see what Insta360 does.

This is perfect for those of us that live in the UK, where overcast skies are something we encounter a lot. Most of the reviews that I've seen have been done in Calafornian sunshiny brightness. Even going for a walk on a 'bright' day here soon shows the weakness of any action camera when you go through shaded areas... and as for inside, well that just looks like jelly. I own an Action 3, so the 5 looks AMAZING. Would be nice to film ALL day, not just when the sun's 'cracking the pavements' and have some usable footage. Thanks for the upload. 🙏

This video clinched it for me. I was impressed with your Action 3 versus Action 4 video, but when I saw the Action 5 was only a little bit more than the Action 4 this helped me. I want to use it for both indoor and outdoor vlogging and it seems like they've really improved the low light quality. Thankyou Tamara so much for helping me decide.

Hey, great video again 😊
OA5 is definitly better under low lights condition.
But, in outside video, looking at the clouds, we can see them on OA4 (different grey tones), and they can't be seen on OA5 (clouds seem washed...single grey tone).
Hope this will be fixed in a FW update.

Dear Tamara,

Thank you for your insightful review! Your work is consistently engaging, and I truly consider you one of the best in the field. I’ve been eagerly searching for confirmation on my next action camera, and while I’ve always enjoyed the Osmo Action 4, I’m noticing some differences with the Osmo Action 5 that give me pause.
Specifically, the dynamic range in the footage feels a bit off to me, with the image appearing somewhat muddy or washed out. In particular, I've noticed that cloud details seem to be completely lost in multiple shots, especially when compared to the clarity of the Osmo Action 4. I understand this might come down to how the footage is handled in post-production, or perhaps a difference in settings, but I wanted to ask: does the original footage show a similar loss of cloud detail, shadow, highlights, or overall color contrast?
(I’ve noticed this in a few other reviews as well, and it’s left me a bit uncertain.)

Looking forward to your thoughts, 🙏

it's cool that it's soo much brighter at night now but i really think you look better on the 4 skin tones wise. ALSO, the 4 is darker but the strong shadows make it look GOOD to me. Yes.. You can achieve the stronger shadows and the better skin tones with editing but you've already got it in the 4.

I know it isn't your total wheel house but I think everyone wants to see both Ace Pro head to head with Action 5 Pro in low light but also when there is a bit of camera movement... ie. how is the EIS low light stabilization between the cameras. It seems obvious in these early tests that Ace Pro is still winning the low light battle but it would be great to see how close DJI comes and how stable the image remains when walking or a brief jog or something. Thanks!

I have OA4 and was waiting for OA5 Pro but now I have doubts whether to buy. There are some improvements but it seems that OA5 Pro has strong HDR on all the time. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it ruins the image. I have OA4 and Pocket 3 and it seems to me that this set matches better in terms of colors. OA5 has less natural colors and a much boosted sky color. In OA4 I can brighten shadows in post-production and the effect is great!

I don't believe DJI, that they did some low-light-magic because of a better chip or less nanometer production.
I think they just bumped up the shadows much more by software and it's a marketing gag. Same with the 48MP pictures. I'm pretty sure, the OA4 could easily do it as well.

I will skip the OA5 for these kind of "artifical" upgrades.

Thanks for the videos :)

What is the problem with action 5? Why I can see sky on action 4 and can't see it on action 5? I just sold my action 4 to buy action 5 but as I can see action 4 was better, so disappointed
