How to change background color based on cell value in excel?

This tutorial is for beginners and we will be using excel conditional formatting to solve this problem. Remember, I am using excel 2010 for the demonstration. This tutorial is very easy and quick. No need to memorize any formulas for this one. You won’t need VBA code either. Just a few clicks will do the job. Let’s get started.

Well, you opened the workbook already right? If not, then do that and follow the instructions below.

1. Click on Home Tab
2. Click on conditional formatting
3. Click New Rule
4. Now select “Format cells that contain”
5. Fill the value range
6. Click on format and select the fill color.
7. Click OK and see the result

You just changed the background color based on cell value in excel.

Hello there. I have a question and I hope if you could help. Let's say for example I have a list of people and lab numbers on columns A and B, respectively as [John, 100; Mike, 101; Adam, 102; John, 103] on Worksheet 1. Note that the same John has two lab numbers. Next, what I'd like to do is assign a unique color by people. So you'll end with three unique colors. On Worksheet 2 on Column A, I have a repeat of list of just the lab numbers [100, 101, etc.]. My goal is to assign the same color that we already assigned to people and lab numbers in Worksheet 1 to lab numbers in Worksheet 2. Can you help with that? If this example is too confusing, please provide an email contact and I can send a sample worksheet. Thank you.
