Why I want to join the Coast Guard: I love boats, my father was a sailor, and I want to move forward in life. Dead end jobs aren't fun after a few years.

I’m joining the coast guard rather than another branch because it allows me to build a family and stay with them more easily than any other branch

I am a 53 year old Minnesota native, and I retired from military service after twenty two years in 2012. I was in 1990-2012. I was a jet engine mechanic in the Navy for eight years, and an Air Transportation Specialist in the Air Force for fourteen years. I did manage to get my Bachelor's Degree during that time. I studies Aviation Science. With all that, I never married, nor do I have any children. Still single, and very busy working with FedEx and plan on more college. I was young and head strong, joining the military at eighteen. Working on the flight deck of a U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier really is quite an experience, particularly in wartime operations, like Desert Storm. The Air Force was challenging too, particularly during the Global War on Terror. My service did put me around this planet twice. I say all this realizing how interesting the Coast Guard might be, because of its uniqueness. Until 2010, they were responsible for monitoring all LORAN stations. We had one of those in Baudette, Minnesota up on the Canadian border, and literally out in the middle of nowhere. I lived close to there as a kid, and it is literally 10-20 miles between towns, and absolutely nothing in between. The Coast Guard also may still man the lighthouse out of Duluth, MN to service it, as those are computer run now. There is also a rescue base out of Duluth. Minnesota does have unique jobs in the Coast Guard, but I am passionate about Aviation. I love anything to do with airplanes. Again, the uniqueness of the Coast Guard attracts me. If I could get age wavered, I would love considering the possibility of going in. I even have some time as a pilot.

The USCG honestly seems to be more organized and they don't deserve the hate they get. Compared to the other branches, the coast guard has their shit together.

I'm currently enrolling in the CG Auxiliary and plan to enroll in Mass Maritime Academy in a year or so to become a Coast Guard Officer. The reason I'm picking CG over other branches is because I want to mostly work in disaster relief, search and rescue, environmental protection, etc. and CG seems much more regularly involved in that than the other branches.

Wish me luck!

I have a really bad family life and I'm sort of stuck, I have no real direction either so that's kinda a downer. I was thinking the coast guard would be good cause like you said a sense of community, and also I heard they pay for college and I have no real income yet, so that would be a huge blessing. I also went to some college classes for IT so that might help!

The only thing i can probably relate to is the fact that i love being in the water or around it. Im lookin for a chance to change my life, i have always found myself struggling financially no matter what and I’m sick of it. The only problem why i haven’t joined is bc i feel like my stubbornness or pride might get in my way and that honestly aggravates me like why am i like this lol

I am 22 working at amazon and just now seeing the Coast Guard! I waas a FISH as a kid always loving and comfortable in the water. It seems to naturally call me. I am dedicating my next 5 months to training, lifting weights again and running and swimming to prepare for BT. I know I can do it and I will do it. Another reason is I am in Minnesota but my Family is in Alabama and New Orleans I hopefully I would be able to be stationed near them. I cannot stress how comfortable in water I am I love water and swimming. I cannot wait for this journey.

My son is a shooter in the marines .I'm constantly worried. He is always getting moved around in dangerous situations. Always combat due to his specialty. I often regret teaching him to shoot so well .but I supose it would be worse if he was regular infantry. I'm trying to get my daughter to joint the coast guard in sd.fingers crossed

Reason I want to join the coast guard is partly to do with the 5th reason of this video and lastly, I’d rather spend more time in a branch that’s less focused on fighting. I have no desire to potentially kill someone although for the single life, being deployed somewhere like South Korea for a year would be awesome if you were in the Army let’s say. Great travel opportunity but you have that in the coast guard too.

I’ve wanted to join the coast guard for about 6 years I’m 24 I had some set backs out of high school but I’m finally ready for more than a job I want a career and all I’ve heard is positives and never really any negatives about joining other than being underway can be a little rough at times but so can any job I’m finally going in tomorrow to get a look at one of the stations and to speak with a few members and a recruiter hopefully all goes good and to anyone else thinking of joining or are on the fence just do it or go to a station and speak with members I don’t see any other jobs offering what the coast guard can.

And best wishes to anyone like me trying to join and to those already in Thank you for your service.
