Faith City Church Sermon Recap: The Principle of First and Best
Today’s sermon, part 5 of the "40 Days of Generosity" series, focused on two fundamental principles regarding our relationship with God through our resources:
Principle 1: If God is FIRST, then there is REDEMPTION over everything that remains
- When God is positioned first in our lives, everything else falls into proper order
- Scripture emphasizes putting God first in all aspects of life (Proverbs 3:6, Matthew 6:33)
- Anything given to God first is never lost, but anything not given to God will be lost
- Key verse: "In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success" (Proverbs 3:6)
Principle 2: If God is FIRST, then He deserves the BEST
- God not only wants priority but deserves our best offerings
- Illustrated through the biblical example of Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:3-5)
- Abel's offering was accepted because he gave the "firstborn of his flock"
- Key verse: "By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous" (Hebrews 11:4)
Foundation of Ownership
- We must recognize God's ownership of everything
- "The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness of it" (Psalm 24:1-2)
- Tithing is returning to God what is already His (Leviticus 27:30)
- "The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine, says the Lord of hosts" (Haggai 2:8)
Application
- Giving to God first breaks the curse of the destroyer on everything else
- Our giving reveals the condition of our heart (Mark 12:41-44)
- King David's example of refusing to offer sacrifices that cost him nothing (2 Samuel 24:24)
- Generosity exceeds normal cultural traditions and practices
- The ultimate example: "For God so loved the world that He gave..." (John 3:16)
God is not a replacement for what money fails to fix, but should be the foundation of our lives in every area, including our finances.
