The reason why its so critical not to go overboard in the North Sea is cause no matter what kind of flotation device you have those giant balls of steel that are required to work out there will drag you straight to the bottom. All joking aside, my hats off to those who do work the North Sea.

I worked oil rigs from '74-'96.
In the late '70's I had an opportunity to take a job on one of the platforms in the North Sea.
A 2 yr contract for $80, 000. That was a LOT of money back then.
I eventually decided Not to take that opportunity and about 3 weeks later one of those Typhoon's came through and took out the platform I was considering.
God was looking out for me way back then too.

As a retired US Navy Sailor, I have traveled over many seas and oceans during my career. The most dangerous body of water in the world is the North Altantic during the winter months. Nothing but white caps and high waves reaching over 300 ft as far as your eye can see. US Destroyers and Cruisers, the entire bows go under water every 100 ft. I have pictures of Aircraft Carriers I served on showing aircraft on the bow completely drenched by waves so high that they are completely underwater for about 10 seconds before becoming visible again. Each aircraft was tied down with 18 chains, which are used during heavy weather conditions. The pictures were taken on the 07 level deck from the carrier island. I have seen these high waves completely rip off steel catwalks on the ship. I have had many conversations with merchant marine sailors, and we all agree that the North Atlantic Ocean in the wintertime is one of the most dangerous bodies of water to cross.

100k a month still ain’t enough. If GOD wanted me in that type of water all the time, I would’ve been born a fish.
