Yes, You are right about the garbage system. Malta needs a proper garbage system. Every street has to provide more garbage boxes, that everyone can put the garbage in separate boxes for recycling.

Alex, how good of you to show a different perspective for visitors to your channel so that you demonstrate yourself to be truly honest. Of course that's how you came across anyway, as totally genuine and guileless, even before this video, but this video cements that perception. The garbage was a tad perplexing, especially when a number of us who rented in a building had to put all our individual garbage bags (recycling, straight-up refuse, and compost) into one big pile in the street out front, and the days for compost, food basically, were ones that pigeons and other scavengers seemed to know and appreciate well. You're smart to suggest the ground floor of places to rent being ones suited well to offices. Great video again, Alex!

I will come to Malta at the end of this summer and hopefully work there as an engineer for about 3 years. When I search for an apartment in Paceville and St. Julians, rents are exactly what you had said. Also there are flats which 2 bedrooms 3-4 years old most are at 1400-1500 euros. I don’t know if they are normal prices but I don’t want to pay through the nose.

I'm half Maltese half English. I have lived abroad for many years. Currently I am living here in Malta, I have been living here for about 20 years, before that I was living in Japan. Now if you continue to live here, I promise you this. You will have much more to complain about 😂. But yes, you are absolutely right in everything that you mentioned.

Hi Alex, I'm wondering if you or any other locals can help me out. My friend and I are coming to Malta during the dates for the Nadur Carnival/ Malta Carnival! (Starting 25th Feb) As far as I'm aware the carnival is going ahead. We had no idea it existed! Do you know if the celebrations are going to be all over the islands, or just in Floriana, Valletta and Nadur? We're not really looking for a party type of trip, so if you know some places that will definitely be a lot quieter and calmer, I'd really appreciate your recommendations. Thanks

I do agree with you! The garbage system! Wow man I literally hate it! Why do we need to put our garbage in front of our doors? blocking the way for pushchairs, wheelchairs and sometimes even blocking all the way for people to walk on the kerb. Till it gets collected it looks like the places are very dirty. I believe in the underground dustbin system where can be found in certain areas, where yes WE HAVE TO WALK A BIT and put the garbage there. Also these can be accessible at any time.

Hi Alex
Thank you for an awesome video. Its true in Malta we have some downs but coming to garbage, being Malta is a small compact and hot country in summer especially they had to come up with a system that garbage do not stay long outside and be picked up frequent and avoiding skips around to avoid more chances of animals or smells by heat. To be honest it's easy said than done to fulfill this in a compact island. Apart from that the Maltese were spoilt from the beginning to have the garbage collected from behind the door and therefore if that had to change for sure there will be lots of complaints and of course those who are old and cannot bring the garbage elsewhere will be problem for them. So when you think about the limited space, the heat and the spoiling, the system we have now was the best one to achieve but of course it's like you had mentioned, some do not keep to the rules and then the system gets abused to end in a mess. With regards to high rents, it became outrageous for some. Some people are too greedy and want to get rich quick but then it is backfiring.
It's good we get to know the things you don't like as hopefully it can bring some attention to the right people. 🙂

The cars and the garbage system definitely are my biggest gripe, if the government encouraged and build infrastructure for cycling and people, to reduce the amount of cars on the streets (and maybe give a fresh new coat of paint to some of the buildings) I think Malta would be among the happiest and most beautiful nation on earth.

Imagine a clean Malta but with walkable, people-friendly streets and good public transport infrastructure like Utrecht.

Hi Alex in Malta, in view of your third comment: When an old property has been put up for sale - we mean that the building has lost its potential maybe because of high maintenance costs and therefore it cannot be rented out ! If hypothetically we refer to your example of 1 M, this calculation is based on the current value of the land and its airspace alone - this depends on the number of floors permitted. Hence a prospective buyer/developer must have enough cash to pull down the entire building and re-construct a block of apartments.

The worst thing about Malta is the illegal airhorns used by the gas trucks driving around in the very early morning when most people are still sleeping, or shift worrkers are trying to sleep. #bastards

Hi Alex, we live and work on the island to which we love, let me say this! But we want what is best for Malta and what you have said 100% I agree with, the rubbish, nuff said, - the only solution is maybe collection at night, but this must be down to the local councils and pay the employees well. Investments/ PA so wrong on many levels, in the wrong places, not thinking of the community and its environment. Thank you for sharing your top 3 things about Malta you do not like - I agree with you. Please remember this is all for Malta's own good and development and beauty. Its because we want whats best for Malta - she deserves better! 😀

@Alex in Malta  Hi Alex. Thank you very much for your honest and useful tips in many of your videos. I watched quite a few vlogs made by you before coming to Malta 4 days ago for my vacation. Being a Swiss citizen living in an international, cosmopolitan city in Switzerland, I would like to pitch in and say a few words. My first impressions: The sunshine in the winter is blissful. And not everybody is so blessed. Maltese people are very friendly. And my God! So much culture and history packed in Valletta (I only know Valletta at the moment). Safety, food choices, night life are all very good. Having said this, garbage does seem to be an issue. Why not building an underground collective garbage and recycling site? People will get used to walking a few steps to drop their garbage bags at the community garbage site after a while. Dog's poop is an issue too. And too many cars in the historical centre of the capital.
On the whole, Malta is a great place. It might become even better with a bit more planning and efforts.
