Craig Murray, former diplomat and Rector of Dundee University has recently published a full biography of Alexander Burnes of Montrose, titled 'Sikunder Burnes - Master of the Great Game'. Burnes (1801-1841), was born in Montrose and achieved fame as a spymaster, explorer, soldier, scientist and diplomat in early 19th c India.

Burnes’ circle included many Angus men who ruled India. John Stuart Mill, great philosopher and son of James Mill of Northwater Bridge, each in turn secretary of the East India Company. James Skinner of Montrose, colonel of Skinner’s Horse, still India’s premier regiment. Allan Octavian Hume of Montrose founder of India’s Congress Party, the world’s largest political party, David Ouchterlonie of Montrose, conqueror of Nepal, George Buist of Dundee, editor of the Bombay Times. James Ramsay of Panmure, Governor General of India. Burnes also worked with Charles Lyell of Kirriemuir, founder of modern geology and tutor of Darwin.

This is a wonderful opportunity to hear about a generation of Montrosians who made a true mark on History.
