Oculus Rift Review

I've had the Oculus Rift for a while now, and my thoughts on it are about as level as they're going to get. Hope it doesn't come off as too much of a rant, but I just wanted to be honest.

First! Just a heads up, but in spite of everything that I say in this video, the CV1 and the current crop of VR is still pretty awesome. It's just that for a guy that contemplates watercooling their own body and magnetic leviation for g force manipulation, you can imagine how disappointing the first generation was destined to be.

We're all waiting for Nerve Gear, you're not alone there. Just keep in mind that the people behind Oculus, HTC, Sony, etc. are not thinking about making people's dreams come true. All they're thinking about is what will make them the most money. So just because we were given less than what we were expecting, doesn't mean that the technology for what we want isn't out there, or is at least closer than they want us to think at this time.

One thing that you were saying in this video kinda got to me, and its how you seemed convinced that the CV1 and HTC Vive is the best thing these companies could throw at us. I dont think this is true at all. In my opinion, what they have done here is downgrade the specs of their headsets. They did this because it would make the price lower to increase sales. Realistically, if they made it any more expensive they would have only made a fraction of what ever they are making now.

The truth is what it is, you dont have to like it. In my opinion the Oculus team originally had the best of intentions to deliver to the public the best possible VR experience they could. Unfortunately they were bought out by Facebook. It may seem like this was the right move, and it was for the developers, not for the consumers though.

You're probably right to lose faith in the big companies developing VR right now. Just don't let this convince you that what they are selling is their very best.

I honestly think that 2022 is a realistic time frame for full dive technology to be real. Whether or not a big company will be the one to create it however, is yet to be seen.

Wow, that hit me pretty hard. I had a lot of high hopes for this HMD myself. like you, I got interested in Virtual Reality after watching Sao. I dreamed of VR becoming a true reality ever since hearing about the DK1. It's a little sad to see the fragments of progress we have made since then, but never give up hope for VR man! I swear I will live to see the day that I can truly experience the Full Dive. Maybe one day you could work on creating your own HMD, or make a contribution to the VR community. I'll always respect you, and support you in the best way I can.

I really wish there was a seated vr device similar to the oculus rift that went all out on the virtual reality experience instead of focusing on how it looks and feels. Like large 4k screens with a 160 field of view and a smooth 90 fps combined with head tracking down to the millisecond.
This would probably cost a few thousand dollars for just a single device and it'd only be directed towards the rich and huge enthusiasts, but at least it would provide an awesome immersive experience allowing us to become closer to making games like sao.

I thought He said You know it's been about a Month since the Oculus Rift CV1 Came into My Pleasure, but He said Possession.

It's not really fair to compare a real-world product with something from science fiction (nerve gear). I appreciate that you have high expectations, but being disappointed with the rift for that reason is somewhat akin to complaining that the "lightsaber" you bought at Walmart isn't real. Inter-cranial stimulation is so far off in the labs, let alone in consumer-level products, you need to be a little more realistic in your expectations. The rift and vive represent the state-of-the-art in consumer-level products, and I think for $600 you're getting a pretty good value. Add much higher resolutions, higher FOVs, potentially inner-ear stimulation, etc to future versions and it will just keep getting better.

Nice to see something different to the 'gosh', 'wow', 'OMG' reactions! If the field of view of CV1 is less than DK2 it cant be 110, as a lot of spec sheets claim. It seems Oculus might have further lowered the FOV to try and eliminate the screen door. Are you sure it really is less than the DK2? If so, could you estimate by how much?

Don't give up!!

Just because 2 Billion Dollars lead Oculus toward one way, doesn't mean you can't build hardway your own special way. At the very least draw out some dream plans for your work, I'd love to see what you mean by watercooling & magnetic levitation & stuff.

I can't even wrap my head around the road you wanna take with VR, and although I'd probably be fine with the current experience, I still wanna imagine what you can come up with if I ever fully understand it.

Quick question. Is the concept of using microwaves for neural manipulation possible, or is full-dive like nervegear not possible.

These headsets that read the users brain waves, is it possible to attach one of them to the Occlus Rift and then your awake and you could lie down or sit and do all actions with your brain?

I'm with you on that one, the Nevre Gear couldn't be higher on the list of shit i would like to personally see and experience but unfortunately the people with the money don't think that way. You're not alone

i'm just happy this vr train is taking off granted that its going to be 50-75 years at best for sword art online vr sucks but that's how it is look at when video games first gite main stream it took them 50-75 years to get it up to the point when it did not matter if its new or old because it look mostly the same ps3-ps4

Hey, I don't know if you remember me, its been a very long time since I visited your channel, but I believe we had several discussions in the past

I was inspired and enlightened by SAO's portrayal of VR as I believe you were as well, and I have spent much of my time thinking about VR. I even started a small VR group, where I made a website and sought out those other very intelligent people whom had also experienced this same inspiration. I don't want to brag, but for this message to be taken seriously it is important for you to know that I am number one in my class of 250 students at a prestigious private high school, so please don't think of me as an idle unmotivated dreamer, as I believe I am quite the opposite, and consider myself a very driven person. Don't get me wrong, I have dreams about this, but I try my best to act as well.

I cared enough about this that I decided to stop listening to the simplistic garbage that many people on the internet propose (Not you, of course). You, as a "Virtual Dreamer", do careful and accurate analysis, as well as setting out to discover more on your own. I was sick and tired of those others who had no knowledge and all dreams, and who wasted my time with their meaningless propositions of ideas that would never ever work. In order to learn for myself, I managed to attend a 3 week overnight neuroscience camp last summer, taught by two PHD's. I was able to ask them a lot of questions, and also to make connections with other intelligent and driven people. After the camp, I reckon I felt about how you felt in making this video. WE ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE. We know NEXT TO NOTHING about how our neurons choose where to synapse, about the functioning of memory and emotion, and even our understanding of senses like smell and taste is deeply muddled. Reading papers at camp that are at the forefront of neuroscience research simply show me how much guesswork we still use, and how the understandings we do have are either far too specific or far to vague.

This video you made has depressed me quite a bit. I had hoped that where science was failing, capitalism would take hold, and that the "invisible hand" of economics would redirect resources towards VR. To all appearances that was what was happening, but as is clear by this video, we have all been deceived. The buying of Oculus by FACEBOOK reeked of gimmick, and that was when my doubts began. And here we are today, asking: "how could a company with BILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF INVESTMENT not produce a spectacular product???" For god's sakes, we are not building the nerve gear here, ITS A FREAKING SCREEN WITH LENSES. How hard can it be to get this right? With thousands of years of collective discovery on physics, optics, and atomics we still could not make a screen attached to our face that looks similar to the reality that our eyes perceive from light bouncing off of our surroundings. We can't even make a passable attempt.

In some ways, this video has motivated me even more. My goal is to gain entry to MIT and to double major in Neuroscience and Computer Science. It is a lofty dream, but I believe I just might be able to pull it off if I use every last bit of willpower and intelligence that I have. The VR group I made has sort of fallen apart, due to my lack of motivation, and I regret that so much that I feel like reaching out to all the members again. We need to gather the top talent of this generation if we even want a shot at putting humanity on track towards the nerve gear. Even with such commitment, we likely won't see such a device in our lifetimes, but that is a sacrifice one generation has to eventually make to improve life for every following generation. I think we are poised to do it now.

Thank you for reading my post, and I hope you see how much I care about this topic. If you have any comments about my situation, whether it be advice or criticism, I would be happy to see it. I just really appreciate another mind that looks past the stupid gimmicks and sees the potential to change the way the entire human race perceives life.

Sincerely,
Liam Brown

P.S. I saw you mentioned mobile VR in one of your comments on this video. I tried it out, and was EXTREMELY underwhelmed. To me at least, it looked aweful, and I would never prefer it to a computer screen, even for immersion purposes. I don't know if I used a bad demo or what, but I am extremely skeptical of the mobile phone platform for VR.

Sadly we'll only get anything else in a couple of years, and i'll be surprised if 3 or 4 years from now they release a "updated" OCULUS S2 2S XD SL KEK IDROID etc, and it'll be like, just slightly better in specs. Very sad.

thank you for making that video. it's only a month till I got my cv1 finally yaaay. and I know that it is not as good as hoped but I will try to do the best I can with the things we have available at the Time so I will head doent the road we are currently in with all those vr companies.

Other VR options that aren't the Oculus or Vive:

StarVR, - incredible FOV

Fove - Eye tracking

And then the best "locomotive devise" i've found is:

Katwalk

I"m still very much optimistic about the future of VR, not sure Oculus will be in the picture but we'll see.

Well that sucks to here, but I mean I heard that oculus was making a team in the UK. Also the Czech company made a 3, 000 dollar headset. Pretty sure it's not for consumers but I think it's just for the best experience with the best tech. You should check that out and make a vid about. That's basically all I know about it xD

When capitalism played it's part and bought Oculus, that's when they no longer had the intention to give us their absolute best but in fact see how much money they could make while slowly progressing their tech. To me it seems that Oculus is just trying to see how long they can keep the wheels running to make money, if you're an SAO fanatic then now is probably a good time to stop buying into their products until someone else comes along to push the boundaries on what's already been done.

Also, I Agree with all the Points You made, I Love SAO. Manga, Anime, Novels, ETC
But I am not One of those People Either, Just Like You, Until We get SAO/Nerve-Gear, I can't give My Honest Opinion Either. No One will Listen besides My Father, I Guess us Three are Alone Here. But this isn't the Climax, Nor the End, it is just the Beginning so don't Hate just Yet. Have Hope still, Your faith is NOT Killed! This has just Begun!!!! And I am just talking about the Oculus Touch, the age of VR is just beginning.

I know that technology is moving fast, but I'm not an early adopter. I'm more of an early majority. Therefore, I'm going to wait a couple of years before buying VR. A similar thing happened when blue ray was competing against HDDVD. There were a small number of people who actually bought a blue ray player or HDDVD player. In 2006, a typical HD tv was over $1, 000. A typical blueray player was over $300. By 2008, people who invested in HDDVD lost and blue ray was the winner.
