Use a mask instead of deleting the extra. Then you have the option of moving the design around to the best possible orientation. Always choose the non destructive option rather than cutting away if possible

Never delete. Use a layer mask. You never know when you need to move some things around later and you'll have to redo all that work.

It should warp around the edge. Make a rectangle, convert to smart object, transform > warp, fix the design here as per your convenience.

You can add warp to make the source pattern image look like more of the cup

Better yet, create a mask of cup to crop the image but slightly form it to the cup using warp

Use select subject or pen tool make cup apart from image then clipin mark the texture and change the blending mode then blend it in fx 😊

Surprisingly this is one of the few things that is actually easier to do in gimp.

CTRL-A before CTRL-C if you want to select the whole thing. It’s a lot faster

Use Control+A to select all instead of using selection tool, you used shortcut keys for paste so...this is just one more

Good job, but still not the best way, try the “ mock-up “ style, so it will warp nicely and look more natural.
