I've been reluctant to pick this series up, but I'm glad to hear you at least found it somewhat enjoyable! That gives me slightly higher hopes.

I had the same problems with ACOTAR, but ACOMAF is one of my most guiltiest of pleasures. I can't wait for book three. I get squealy (if that's a word) just thinking about it. Sometimes I wonder if the author planned the "switch" in the second book or if it was due to reader response? That would be interesting to know.

Great reviews! I'm like you in that I read ACOTAR and thought it was alright, but nothing spectacular. I had heard so many good things about ACOMAF that I had to pick it up and see what the hype was about and I was completely blown away by how much more I liked it than the first one. I agree that there are still some problematic things in ACOMAF, but it is so much better than ACOTAR imo.

I'm so glad you loved A Court of Mist and Fury. I also fell head over heels for ACOMAF and the love interest. Can't wait for the third book either.

Now that you've read it, what do you think its chances are of winning a Booktube SFF Award? High up there for you?

I read the first one and thought it was okay but listened to the second book in one sitting and it was great. The book is pretty big so you know if I sat/ laid around all day it was I am counting down the days until the next book. I also have issues getting into her Throne of Glass series though I keep trying because I loved this book so much. what I can say about the author is it seems to be her style to have the series go in a different direction than she makes you think it will in the first book.

ACOMAF took me by surprise because I read it right after ACOTAR without hearing anything about the series other than the books were loosely based on fairytales. I went in with no expectations for either book and left loving the second book.

The stupid - repeated - mistakes Feyre made in ACOTAR annoyed me to no end, but I did pick up ACOMAF and I really enjoyed it. Although, admittedly, there were still some eye-rolling scenes with the new love-intrest. I've pre-ordered the special ACOWAR box from TheYAChronicles, so it's safe to say I'm excited about that one. I hope we get to see (a lot!!) more of Azriel because I found him to be very intriguing.
Great review, btw :-)

Yes, yes, yes, soo excited for book 3 to come out in may. :DI bought the first one spontaneously because Sarah J. Maas is one of the few YA authors I can read without cringing and hating every character and because I needed a lighthearted romance at that time. I enjoyed both of them quite a bit and I do agree, the love interest of book 2 is so much better. He is just... sigh.

Do I have to read the 1st one to read the 2nd? I've read the first couple of the Throne of Glass books and felt that was plenty for me. I'm curious by the big turnaround that ACOMAF seems to be made of, but I don't know if I want to give up some of my reading time to slog through ACOTAR.

Wow I'm so surprised by this review! Like you I wasn't particularly impressed with ACOTAR and the hype of ACOMAF from people who predominantly read and rave about YA books wasn't enough to convince me. But now I genuinely might pick this book up!
Huh.

Hmm I did not expect that... I read the first one a year ago and like you I found it SO juvenile and stupid, but now I think I will give the second one a go since I tend to agree with you. Thanks!

aha I'm listening to this now. It's better than Throne of Glass for sure. I don't hate it as much as so many other people seem to. I don't think it's particularly good though cause my standards are quite high. I'm excited to get to book 2.

I definitely agree that ACOTAR isnt that great, I was doing a buddy read and thats the only reason I moved on to ACOMAF, and oh....my...gosh! I fell so hard for this series. I have book 3 preordered as well. And Rhysand is amazing....although i wasnt a fan of him in book 1 because of things that were explained in book 2.

I'm about a third of the way into this "Court of Thorns and Roses". I agree with your critique, but I plan on finishing the book.

I had to LEM "Written in Red" by Anne Bishop. It was too much "human guilt" with the trope of a useless girl impressing non-humans simply by showing up to work and not stealing things. When a elderly vampire says that the girl is a rare "sweet-blood" (aka she is to be treated special just by existing), I tossed the book off the cliff like a Lemming. I am now hyper-sensitive to these cliche themes.

My problem with "Court" is they seem to be following the Pretty Woman cliche. Lowly female tossed into contact with a rich and powerful male with a troubled past or problem. Only her love & loyalty can heal him/fix the problem. Not to mention having servants to bathe, dress, feed her as punishment for murdering one of them... (Oh yeah, that's believable.)

I DO like good characters and writing so if an author can create complex characters or an interesting world, I can forgive using some of the time-worn story lines to hang things from. I also have to cut YA books some slack as I am not a teen/20 something female that is the obvious target market for this book. I've not gotten to the sex scene yet, but I am grateful that Mass did not make her heroine a virgin. Sex scenes are tricky for authors as society rates horrific violence as acceptable, but sexuality as taboo. It's a tough line to walk.

Thank you for the review. I will probably order the second book as you say it appears to be better than the first.
