When Ferrari saved Charles Leclerc's Formula 1 career

For those confused, Leclerc wanted to know if he stayed at the same pace for the rest of the race, where he would finish compared to other drivers with faster pace(assuming time is not lost overtaking), and instead of useful information his engineer replied with the obvious “if we keep him behind we stay in front”

I remember this race. Leclerc was in P1 but his tyres were degrading. Bottas was in P2 and catching. He and the team were trying to evaluate whether its better to stop for new tyres or keep going, hoping they can keep Bottas at bay. Leclerc was trying to find out 3 things with this question:

1) Will going at this pace degrade the tyres to the point they have to pit?
2) What position do they have a chance of if they pit?
3) Can they keep Bottas behind with this pace deficit if they stay out (similar to how Max was able to keep Norris behind at Imola 2024 even with a huge pace deficit)

Xavi meant well, but didn't communicate clearly. I think he meant that if they stay out, they have enough pace and life in the tyres to fight Bottas for the win. Clearly this wasn't the case because Leclerc ended up pitting and finished P4. Realistically, they could've fought for P2 or P3 if he stayed out.

For those who don't get it. He was asking in relation to if they had to do any future Pitstops, or strategy changes, etc that might result in him losing positions WHEN THE RACE ENDS. Xavi answered the question in relation to his CURRENT position 🤦‍♂️

Edit: I'm gonna explain this further with an example to explain it even better. Assume the race is a 60 lap race. Where on average every car has to do 2 pit stops. When you do pit stops, you lose positions. So based on that you can go for a one stopper, two stopper etc. Teams usually have simulations running in the background that predict the position you will finish in depending on how many pit stops you do. So take this (imaginary) example where it's a 60 lap race, and currently it's lap 30. Leclerc has pitted once and he is in position 1. But he knows that he has to pit again soon because his tyres are degrading, so given that he has to pit eventually he asks his engineer what position he will end up at, at the end of the race, after doing a pit stop and losing positions. But his engineer replies about his current position as if he doesn't already know that...
