What are the key differences between functional cognitive disorder (FCD) and dementia?

The main difference between FCD and other forms of cognitive impairment is internal consistency. This means that what a person with FCD reports about their memory issues often doesn't match their test results or how well they function day-to-day.

People with FCD are usually more anxious and worried about their memory than those around them. On the other hand, people with dementia often don't realize they're having memory problems and aren't even worried about it.
