Make It Easier To Begin Songs - Doina Accordion Lesson

How do you start songs? Do you play the first note? Is there a flourish to it, or is it a slow, drone-y intro?

One of my favourite techniques for solo accordion is the Doina. It's most popularly used in Romanian and Eastern European songs, but in this lesson I explain how to apply to any genre of music. I purposefully use non-Doina song examples to give you an idea of the technique.

This is very interesting! Thank you. This week while visiting my son’s resting place I saw a woman holding an accordion! She was a little way off sitting in the sun near her car, and she invited me to join her. She is a music teacher learning the accordion. She usually is running in the cemetery, I found out, and she sees my regular visits while I did not notice her. She let me play her accordion and said we could meet again there and play together if I bring my accordion. Last summer I sat on a stone bench at the bank of the peaceful river near my son and I played old hymns on my accordion. The sounds travel nicely over the water to boaters and homes on the other shore. It is a sad place to gather but there is a lot of activity at this cemetery. Lots of people visit their loved ones and are free to decorate elaborately. We see the same people every weekend. I hope you like this accordion story.

The very beginning of "El Tango De Roxanne" from the movie "Moulin Rouge" comes to mind. Do I have the right idea?
