You know when a story is fictional when the story has an obvious script that the subjects would never have in a real life conversation.
The big one for me is Samson going back to Delilah 3 times. It's not that a person would ever return 3 times to a toxic person who clearly demonstrates they want to seriously harm them, but the dialogue has such a goldilocks and the 3 bears telling and repeating of lines that it cannot possibly be real. No one talks like that outside of poetry or fables where the writer is engaging with the reader's suspense and plot building.
Despite what centuries of literature studies will reveal and is consistent every single time across all cultures and languages, there are many tradmarks of written fiction that believers need to pretend don't apply to stories in one book in order to keep believing these stories really happened the exact way they're told.

When I was Christian I always just thought Satan in this story was either just deluding himself, thinking all on Earth belongs to him, or indeed partitioning the Creation with God (material to Satan, immaterial to God, but the immaterial created the material, therefore God could control Satan but he still ruled over the Earth or sth). Now I just don't believe in the Bible, but giving a possible rationalization here :))

Maybe Satan did it not to temp Jesus, he did it to aggravate Jesus. Here’s a better question; Since God knows Satan is pure evil, then why hasn’t he removed him from destroying the rest of his flock? If you raise a pet fox, but he starts getting into the hen house and killing them, would still keep the fox around to do more damage…..of course not!

The point is that Satan was so full of pride that he thought he could tempt Jesus not that what he was promising was worth anything.
