Located just 100 meters from Serres Refugee Camp, LHI's Refugee Center is a buzzing hive of education and healing. The Center serves the camp’s is 1,000+ Yazidi refugee residents—survivors of the genocide in 2014.
At the Refugee Center, daily classes are held on a range of subjects: English, German, dance, yoga, fitness, piano, guitar, and more. Camp residents also have access to the Center’s computer space, and social events are held including movie nights, talent shows, and weekly parties marked by traditional Yazidi dancing and singing.
The Center also features a Female-Friendly Space with women-only events and activities including sewing, knitting, self-care, trauma-informed yoga, and a variety of workshops led by camp residents. There’s a Child-Friendly Space with supervised educational- and play-based activities, and yoga for kids. And the Aid Distribution Warehouse provides periodic clothing “shopping trips,” and weekly distributions of dry food, fresh produce, and hygiene supplies.
