Oh I loved The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon! I read it when I was 12, about 11 years ago, and loved it! I never see anyone in the King community talking about it

The first Stephen King book I ever read, the first horror story I ever read, was "Pet Sematary". What an introduction! Nothing quite compares 🤩

Great job. Great recommendations. I can't tell you how many times I've suggested The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon as the perfect first King book for younger readers to start with. It's not super graphic and the profanity is super low compared to a lot of King's other books.

I want to read more from him, but I don’t like to be too freaked out

Very fun video - AGREE: he's not just horror. The guy does it all.

My dad was LITERALLY the world expert on Stephen King for two decades (not a joke, google Dr. Michael R. Collings), and championed him as not just a "horror writer" but a great storyteller and someone who deserves to be seen as a literary giant.

Thanks for your enthusiasm, for creating communities with readers, and for your thoughts. I love finding reviewers who are talking about their joy, and who communicate it to others.

Fun fact 1 about growing up in my house: one time we came home to find a box waiting on the porch with the return address "Stephen King, Bangor, Maine" that was just the right size for a human head.

Fun fact 2: I remember having this young guy over for dinner and he and my dad talking for hours about King. He'd done a little student film based on a King story my dad had seen and loved. The guy's name was Frank Darabont.

So glad I found your channel. It's difficult to find SK recs that are from a woman's perspective! Thank you!

I just started a Stephen King book club with a friend on facebook. I have also created a discord app group as well. We will be reading the book Pet Sematary for our first book in the club. My friend thought it was a good idea to start a Stephen King book club to help her get through more of his book she hasn’t read yet. I mainly wanted to start the group to encourage myself to keep reading his books and to also talk to someone else who enjoys his books as well. A lot of people think he is a creepy author which he is but i love his writing style. IT chapter 1 was what really got me into Stephen King and wanting to read his books. I have a total of 7 physical books and one audiobook. I have the physical books of: IT, Carrie, Cujo, Misery, The Shinning, Pet Sematary, and 11/22/63. I have the audiobook of The Stand on my mom’s Audible account. I also rent audiobooks free on the Libby app. In our book club if we ended up reading a book I don’t have I may rent it from Libby If I can’t get a copy of the book for myself.

I think Tom Gordon is an excellent beginner King. The narrative character is delightful, and its horror lite enough to not overwhelm. King is often at his best when he has fewer characters.

I just finished Bag of Bones based on yours and other people's recommendations. I loved this book so much! My favorite King book so far. I was so sad at the end though...not what I was expecting!

This is such a helpful video! I read Pet Semetary and I liked it but didn’t love it and I’m one of those people that a book can be 4 stars for me when people rave about it all the time it makes it feel more like a 3 star since I didn’t fluke it as much 😂 I really hope to read Salem’s Lot with the Currently reading book club this months and I also own 11/22/63 so I’ll probably join y’all for that too!

I have a bit of opinion about 11/22/63.

As a person who doesn't come from USA and our school system doesn't really acknowledged about JFK's assasination, I found it so hard to read it without constantly googling the real event (which is annoying to keep pausing). I read the ebook, got bored, switched to audiobook, still bored, but forced myself to finish it cause I want to know the ending.

I think it's a great book, but not for everybody. I say I dislike it cause I don't enjoy the reading process :')))

I'm so glad you included Carrie in this list! A lot of videos I've seen breeze right past it when recommending his books, which I never understood. Personally, I think it showcases his trademark style better than The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon!

I've tried to read Salem's Lot three times. Couldn't get into it. I thought it was boring and never made it past the first 50 pages. Don't come for me lol. Just my opinion. If you are just starting out, don't read the Girl who loved Tom Gordon. It started out good and then flopped. I recommend Pet Sematary, The Dark Half, The Shining was good, Delores Claiborne was excellent, follow that up with Gerald's Game, and actually Cujo was pretty good. If you like short stories, Full Dark, No Stars is good, and the Bazaar of bad Dreams has some good shorts in it. That's where you should start!
