Content warning is a niche case. The dev was well known, and has a fanbase. The concept is close enough to the PvE games that are in fashion that it captures the attention.

Sega of America shadow dropped the Saturn back in '94. It did terrible. If a major console platform manufacturer can't get away with a shadow drop, you probably shouldn't try it with your indie game.

there are some cool games that shadow dropped this month that more people should know more about. "Interstellar Plunderer" a rogue-like with gameplay like "starfox", "Rauniot" a cool isometric post-apocalyptic point and click adventure game, "Mixture" a VR action game were you control a moth warrior along with your standard VR floating hands, and "Silicon War:Blitz" a VR Rogue-lite mecha game. Hopefully this comment will bring more eyes to these games.

Things like early access do help it at least since depending on the length of the game you might not get many reviews for the first few days unless someone binges for it. At the very least i never really want to make a review till i finish the game, which might take a while, but it does help me consider buying something when i see the reviews of some people that got in early.

I'm convinced that shadow dropping a game that isn't streamer bait doesn't work. Most people can't just jump on the new hotness but have to plan out their game expenditure for the month and if you shadow drop you fall outside that plan. Your game could be amazing, but the vast majority of your audience literally doesn't have the money to buy your game and will only get it next month if at all, which means that you generate even less hype and news than a normal release. You are now competing with a whole extra month of game releases as your game potentially slowly ages out of memory and I'd bet a good chunk of people that had been planning to get your game won't even get it the following month either, and eventually interest will just die off because your game is old news now.
