Kaufmann's Rubber Leg Stone, Holsinger's Fly Shop

This weeks video is here thanks in part to one of my customers. I was asked to tie a version of the Kaufmann's Stone with rubber legs. His pattern was really nice but I'm a bead head kinda guy so I thought I'd add a bead to the video. My client prefers the flex floss for the rubber legs because it creates a ton of action under the water. These are a great pattern for chasing fall and winter steelhead, which will be upon us soon. In the video I tied it rather large on a size 8. I wanted some bigger ones for my box, but the majority of my person flies like this are tied on 10's and 12's. I would prefer a different hook like a Firehole 718 for smaller versions due to its larger hook gap.

Like always guys, this pattern is to be used as a base pattern and is intended to be tied in different sizes and colors. If your going to carry stone flies I suggest tying them in at least three different colors, Yellow, Black and Brown. That can be very productive especially when steelhead fishing. One thing I have found in the past is when the fish stop hitting on a pattern often times is you just change the color of the pattern it will trigger hits.

The addition of the flex floss adds a nice trigger to that Kaufmann. Thanks for sharing.

I like this version of a brown stone. For some reason this past year I tend to use rubber legs instead I of di cast legs because of movement.
