President Biden has abandoned his campaign for a second term in the White House, bowing to weeks of pressure from Democratic Party colleagues who demanded he pass the torch to a younger candidate.

In a remarkable U-turn the president, 81, accepted that he no longer had the confidence of his party to be its presidential nominee. He had previously insisted he could beat Donald Trump in November’s election and defy the polls, which showed he was slipping further behind the Republican nominee.
