Home Assistant just got a big upgrade in the April release – the Voice Assistant Preview Edition now supports actual conversations.
In this video, I’ll show you a new feature that lets Home Assistant not only speak to you, but also listen for your response – without needing to say the wake word again. This means your automations can now include interactive prompts that lead to real-time voice-controlled actions.
I’ll walk you through a real-world example: Home Assistant notifies me that the gate’s been open for 5 minutes and asks if I want to close it. I reply "yes" – and boom, the gate closes. No tricks, no edits, no extra wake words in between.
We’ll go hands-on with the new Start Conversation action, test it in Developer Tools, and update an existing automation to use it. If you’ve been using the Announce action, you’ll see how easy it is to switch.
This is perfect for anyone using the Voice Assistant in Home Assistant and looking to make their automations smarter, faster, and way more natural.
