We are still in Hanoi, Vietnam and we are checking out what the price of food is, and we take a short trip to the Hanoi Hilton (Hỏa Lò Prison). Come and see what Hanoi has as a place to retire to.

Can a RIPper living in Hanoi get by on a Cat 1 budget with a decent lifestyle? We are still having a great time in Vietnam and we are really excited to explore Hanoi and we are getting to know its people better and loving what we are experiencing.

So join us as we continue to cover what it is like to live in Vietnam. We will continue to contemplate the question, “what would life be like living in Vietnam as a retiree?” We will continue to see what the upsides and downsides are to living in a Communist country like Vietnam.

Hanoi (Vietnamese: Hà Nội), the capital of Vietnam, and also its second largest city, is a fascinating blend of East and West, combining traditional Sino-Vietnamese motifs with French flair. It is largely unscathed from the decades of war, and is now going through a building boom, making it a rapidly developing city in Southeast Asia.

Hanoi has held the title of Vietnam's capital for more than a thousand years, through several invasions, occupations, restorations, and name changes.

The Nguyen Dynasty gave the city its modern name of Ha Noi in 1831, but they had transferred power to Hue by then; it remained there until 1887, when the French made Saigon and then Hanoi the capital of all French Indochina. It changed hands again in 1954, when it was ceded to Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh after almost a decade of fighting, and it became the capital of North Vietnam; Saigon was the rival in South Vietnam. Upon reunification in 1976, it assumed that title for the entire country.

The climate is tropical, with wet and hot weather much of the year. But due to the city's latitude, temperatures drop drastically in the wintertime and the wind chill and dampness means winter weather can feel cold. If possible, avoid the summer months of mid May to mid September, as the city turns into a sweltering sauna with little to no wind.

Anyway: Time to thank J.C. for all his great info and help. We viewers have been negative at times. But need these videos. I am still grateful for the Thai language blog that J.C. once provided. I hope to study it and tell others. Thanks, R.B.

You haven't mentioned that very few motorbikes in Hanoi have ANY rear-view mirrors. I think you need to look into that!

Yep they think that a tan is from a lower class the girls friend sells whiteing cream in nong khai , great video Jc and great camera work miss nat .

Very interesting video JC and Nat. Are you buying a data sim card while there or just using hotel wifi? Have you been able to use credit cards at most hotels or does one need to carry lots of cash? Thanks.

Hey JC, you really need to give the hawkers a break. Everybody is not retired and these people have to make a living. Also consider that you as a youtuber, hawk more people (in the pop-up adds and comercial adds) in one hour then they do in a month. :) Lighten up.

By far the most interesting city on the trip . A big city that doesn't look like it's totally succumbed to the onslaught of big business .

The orange juice is actually tangerine. Here in the States, a small cup of sugarcane juice costs 5 USD or more.

Another great video JC, thanks for taking the time to make them. I did not make it to Hanoi on my trip to Vietnam, only got as far as Hue then headed back down but hopefully will be back beginning of next year. I really love the place and found the people generally very nice and the food great. Keep up the good work. :)
