Oh my god, I actually learned that on my journey intuitively and I am so glad and happy to see you speak about it! Listen to him guys!
It is crucially helpful skill!
I also think that it is something that we needed from other people and didn't get it when we were little, maybe you were even thought that you do not deserve it (like I was c: ), and this is exactly what is needed! It is good and feels good to give it to ourselves, as well as it is construcive in managing our state of mind and body.

I was triggered recently and I didn’t respond even though the activation reverberated for some time. Afterwards, I was having trouble with fixating on my disappointment with the fact I got triggered, rather than acknowledging the strength it took to curb my urge to respond. This concept helps me reframe that painful experience as a positive sign. Thanks Dr. Fox 🙏

Teach yourself to take a DEEP breath when you feel triggered. It's takes time to learn in the midst of anger, stressful situations, etc..., but once you feel a situation triggering you, pause and take a very DEEP breath (while at the same time, understanding you're being triggered, but don't so much think about your reaction right then)... just think within that milli of a second that the situation is only designed to trigger you)... Then release the breath once you've acknowledged this. By the time you breath out, you will eventually see the situation for what it is, and then understand how to balance your emotions around it without over reacting. ✌️

Been working hard on this lately. Its a constant effort. Sometimes it's easier, less easy when triggered.

I wish I knew where you were located so you could be my therapist. I’m on disability and have been wanting to move soon anyway, lol. Your videos are so helpful and I can’t believe I’ve been in therapy for this since I was 15 (38 now) and none of the concepts you talk about have been presented to me before. I feel like if I had known about this stuff before I could have worked through so much of it that much quicker.

In this issue I think I’ve figured out containment, but I fear my solution might be pretty maladaptive. It almost makes me feel like a psychopath or sociopath because I basically shove all my out of control feelings in a box (ie shut them off) and stop feeling them immediately. It makes me feel nothing at all. Like I’m numb to all emotions even positive ones, and I just kind of float through life until someone comes along and opens the box.

I identify it immediately … I deep belly breathe…. and the urge still overwhelms me and I react. I fail. Ugh 🥺

I have to work on this massively. I got triggered today I don't even know it came from a woman, it took everything not to be a rude B. I tried not to react but they felt something was off.

The emotion is anger/hatred and the necessary containment/confirmation was absent in infancy. The situation that arises is where any significant connection is made it draws into consciousness the desperate need for containment but also that same potential container is also the cause of the distress in the first place. Understanding doesn't seem to have much leverage upon this ideas?
