Neoclassical Metal Lesson | The Phrygian Dominant Scale | Nuclear War!!

This video is a Phrygian Dominant Scale Lesson. A favorite choice amongst Neoclassical Metal guitarists the world over. Just ask Yngwie Malmsteen, Gus G, Or Dave Mustaine! It's also very popular with flamenco guitar players.

Phrygian Dominant is the 5th mode of the Harmonic Minor Scale and contains a raised 3rd degree. For instance, E Phrygian would be spelled, E-F-G-A-B-C-D. E Phrygian Dominant is, E-F-G#-A-B-C-D.

Try using this scale in "Misirlou", "Rainbow In The Dark", or pretty much any flamenco song.

What's your favorite Phrygian Dominant song, or artist that uses the scale? How do you like to use the scale? Have any of your own videos using this scale?

To deconstruct this mode, we'll use the 3 Note Per String Scale System. We'll also use my Modal Pedal Point Exercise to provide harmonic context for the sound of this scale. By using the I-bII chords or E and F we can paint a rich harmonic soundscape that illustrates this haunting mode with clarity.

Let me know if you have any questions, or a different way to approach this scale in the comments below. Let's talk Phrygian Dominant!

Wake Up Dead by Megadeth the last Solo, that's what got me intrigued about Phrygian Dominant.

I find so many YouTube channels that are guitar centric and if they seem like they have anything at all to offer, I subscribe immediately. Because I've subscribed to so many, I couldn't possibly spare enough time to check every video out. So there a 7 or 8 channels that I watch religiously and the others I check out when they're on my suggested video list. Occasionally, after I've watched everything a channel has to off, I bring a new channel into my "watch everyday" group. (Sorry this is so long) What I'm getting at is that just recently your channel has become a "must watch" one and I really dug into your videos. I'm upset at myself for waiting so long. The content is phenomenal, your teaching is top shelf and your playing is addictive. Thank you. When this whole"pandemic is under control, I'll hopefully have enough spare cash to become a Patrion member. Things are tough at the moment. Until then, I'm sincerely grateful for the wealth of free videos and information you provide for free. Thank you.

After watching your "most metal scales, ultimate evil" video, i started working on this mode. Discovered two awesome things - A phrygian dominant is used by Deep Purple in their song "The battle rages on" which led me to the conclusion that the song is written using this mode of the D harmonic minor scale, also the song is in drop D tuning. The other thing i discovered when working out the E phrygian dominant mode, is that this mode is also used by Opeth.

dude your lessons are great and entertaining, would love to see more content discussing lead playing. Not many guys who play metal go in depth with their explanations of the theory.

My favorite gotta be Alexi from CoB who passed away unfortunately. I got into them when I was like 13ish, but only now i grew some balls to start learning neoclassical stuff. Love your channel, i think you don't overload the viewers with too much material at once which can get tricky at times).
Keep shredding 🔥
