This soundtrack changed my life. I was watching the movie with my parents and told them how cool I thought the music was, particularly the French Horns. They asked if I wanted to learn to play it, and I said, "Sure." The rest is history. I was in many bands and orchestras and went to college on a music scholarship. Thank you, Mr. Horner, and God Speed.

My defining piece of soundtrack music as a child. One of the greatest composers to bless us with his music. RIP to boldly go.

RIP James Horner. Thank you for the music.

The original opening is certainly the most iconic, but this is by far the best opening song for any trek movie or series.

Hands down, both my favorite Trek movie AND soundtrack by the incredible Mr. Horner.

I was saddened to learn about James Horner passing away. I learned so much about composing by tearing this score apart. He was brilliant in his arrangement.

So, gather around and let me tell you a story of how my brother played me.
We were raised with both Star Trek and Star Wars. Played the movies to the point the VHS tapes are now utterly useless. Always liked Wrath of Khan the most, because our parents raised us proper.
Anyway, lately I discovered my brother hadn't actually seen Star Trek Into Darkness, and since we're stuck together (due to evacuating the great storm of 2016), I tell him to pull it up via Apple TV or some streaming device. I go into the next room to handle something and I hear him ask "Hey, it's the second one, right?"
"Yeah." I said, not thinking.
Moments later, this beautiful theme starts to play... so we sat down and watched this again for the millionth time.

The opening for this score literally sends chills up my spine. Absolutely epic, absolutely breathtaking.

Considering that this followed on the heels of the great music from Star Trek the motion picture, James Horner definitely made a masterpiece with this soundtrack! He definitely does not get enough credit for the awesome music from this movie!

This was the first score I knew James Horner for. Of course, his most famous was probably Titanic, but James did a marvelous job for this and III, capturing the "Hornblower In Space" mood that Roddenberry originally imagined for the show.
Until Michael Giacchino's scores came along, no other Trek score afterward really stood out as much to me, even though Leonard Rosenman's score for IV was nice. But Horner and Giacchino did a good job with creating secondary Trek themes.
RIP, James.
