Hey everyone, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2020 Volvo XC90, we're gonna be showing you how to install the CURT Trailer Hitch Receiver. Before we get into that though, let's take a minute, we'll check this one out and make sure it's gonna be the right hitch for you. When it comes to these XC90s, you know they're pretty capable SUVs and people do a lot of different things with 'em. So whether if you're trying to pull your trailer around, use an accessory or even a little bit of both, this one's definitely gonna get the job done for you. Right off the bat, I do want to talk about some of the big questions a lot of people ask when it comes to putting this hitch on their Volvo and one of 'em is, "Will it fit my particular submodel" And the answer is yes, this will work with all the different series across the board, you know, so whether it's a base model, fully loaded, hybrid, so on and so forth, it will fit.

And a lot of people also wonder if their hands-free liftgate assist feature will still work, and that answer is also yes. Now as long as you kick your foot to either side of that receiver tube opening, (door latch clicks) it'll open up just like it should. There are quite a few hitches available for the XC90, so I like to just touch base, kinda compare 'em to this one. There's more hidden style ones like our CURT here, which I'm a fan of. With those you're really just gonna be able to see the receiver tube opening and your safety chain openings down here, with one exception.

There is what's called the stealth hitch, and the main body of the hitch will live behind the bumper, but with those, the receiver tube opening is detachable so you can actually remove this part. It'll look completely stocked. So for those of you that looking for, you know, the absolute cleanest look or don't really use your hitch that often, that would be a good solution for you. And with the other ones, they're gonna be more visible. You know, they hang down below the bumper and you're able to see the whole hitch.

With that said, you know, they definitely don't look terrible by any means, but for me, on a vehicle like the XC90, I'm a fan of the more hidden style. I just think they look a lot better. The hitch is gonna have a two inch by two inch opening, which is a good thing. Super common size. A lot of accessories will work with it.

It is going to use your standard five eights pin and clip. Keep in mind though, pin and clip doesn't come included with the hitch. If you need one, not a huge deal. You can always get it here at etrailer. A lot of times too, if you end up buying a new accessory, it'll come with one. Something to look out for there. The safety chain openings are gonna be a little bit different than how most hitches are set up. They actually kind of hang down below the receiver tube opening, which makes 'em really easy to get to. You know, the openings are large enough to allow you to use pretty much any size hook that your trailer might have on it. With this style, they do fit pretty easily but they are kind of a challenge to get off. So something to keep in mind. Might be worth considering changing the ends out on your trailer if they are indeed like this. As far as the weight capacities go, it's gonna have some really good numbers. Maximum gross tongue weight rating is gonna be 900 pounds and that's gonna be the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. That's really high and you should be just fine to use pretty much any size bike rack or cargo carrier that you'd want to, for example. As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating is concerned, that's gonna be 6,000 pounds or the amount of weight pulling on the hitch. So that is the weight of your trailer plus anything that you might have in or on it. Now I do always like to recommend, never a bad idea just to grab your Volvo's owner's manual. That way you can check in there and make sure that your SUV can handle that amount of weight safely. We'll grab a couple measurements now and these will help us figure out what type of accessories will work best. So if you go from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, that's gonna be right at about 14 inches. So for those of you that plan on pulling a trailer around, I'd probably get a ball mount that has a slight rise in the shank, maybe an inch or so. Probably work well for most scenarios. As far as accessories, you know, if your bike rack, let's say has a straight shank, that'll be fine. If you're in the market for a new one, if it, you know, if you can find o
