Hafs létum vér hesta
hlýr stinn á brim renna,
meðan á bjartar brynjur
blóði dreif um síður;
ylgr gein, arnar, mönnum,
eyddist gráðr, of svíra,
harðmeldr gátum heiðan
hveðnu, blóði roðna.

Vestr fór ek of ver,
en ek Viðris ber
munstrandar mar,
Svá 's mitt of far;
drók eik á flot
við ísabrot,
hlóðk mærðar hlut
míns knarrar skut."

Heilir hildar til, heilir hildi frá,
Koma þeir heilir hvaðan

Such a powerful scene, it makes me envision all the warriors across the centuries who have left their homes to fight on far away shores and the traditional ways they were sent off. I wish the world still regularly practiced these traditions

The lyrics :

First part taken from Ragnars saga loðbrókar ok sona hans, kapítuli XIX

"Hafs létum vér hesta
hlýr stinn á brim renna,
meðan á bjartar brynjur
blóði dreif um síður;
ylgr gein, arnar, mönnum,
eyddist gráðr, of svíra,
harðmeldr gátum heiðan
hveðnu, blóði roðna."

The second part is from the Höfðlausn first stanza :

Vestr fór ek of ver,
en ek Viðris ber
munstrandar mar,
Svá 's mitt of far;
drók eik á flot
við ísabrot,
hlóðk mærðar hlut
míns knarrar skut."

The concluding part is from the Hávamál stanza 156 :

"Heilir hildar til, heilir hildi frá,
Koma þeir heilir hvaðan"

Texts found and available on heimskringla.no

The version of the Höfðlausn on heimskringla uses hugknarrar or munknarrar depending on the version, Einar more clearly says míns, which is a version that also exists (but I believe in icelandic instead of O.N.?)

For some reason Youtube doesn't show my comment (maybe because I've linked my sources and it thinks it's spam)
So here are the lyrics that I gathered from the different sagas :

If the full version of this song will appear, please, someone let me know. I know is just for this scene, but is too god not to make a full song out of it.

Great song Einar
voluspa havamal

156. Þat kann ek it ellifta:
ef ek skal til orrostu leiða langvini,
und randir ek gel,
en þeir með ríki fara
heilir hildar til, heilir hildi frá,
koma þeir heilir hvaðan.

157. Þat kann ek it tolfta:
ef ek sé á tré
uppi váfa virgilná,
svá ek ríst ok í rúnum fák,
at sá gengr gumi ok mælir við mik.

"An eleventh I know, | if needs I must lead
To the fight my long-loved friends;
I sing in the shields, | and in strength they go
Whole to the field of fight,
Whole from the field of fight,
And whole they come thence home".

When the ships were made of wood the men were made of steel

vikings is anyways the best series i ever watched, but this scene catched me.
im simply flashed since an hour watching it over and over again. I want this to be sung while my dead body is going on a ship, the ship burned and set to sail. I would sing this song on the grave of a close friend. Its incredibly flashing. Could somebody translate it please?
