Earth Sciences at UH Manoa

Interested in an Earth Sciences degree? The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa offers BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees with emphases in the Earth Sciences, including environmental, marine, and planetary sciences. Hawai‘i’s rich geologic setting, embraced by pristine beaches, tropical watersheds, and world renowned volcanoes, provide an ideal laboratory for studying Earth Science. Our faculty and students also focus on geologic and environmental challenges that threaten planet Earth and in particular, the State of Hawaiʻi, including coastal erosion, sea level rise, landslides, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, and drought compounded by urban stresses with high coastal population density resulting in air and water pollution.

Our mission: To identify and solve fundamental and applied problems in the Geosciences and Environmental Sciences; to acquire new knowledge about Hawai'i, the Pacific Basin, and Earth; to serve society by teaching and training future geoscientists, teachers, and citizens; and to be a principal resource for objective Earth science expertise to the state of Hawaii.
