Video #3a - How to Save your Work in Inkscape Using Windows - Inkscape Tutorial

In this video we show you how to save your work if you are using Windows, as the interface looks slightly different between Windows and a Mac.

You are very welcome Keion. Thank you for letting us know it was helpful. It would have been very frustrating if you were trying to save an image with a transparent background using jpg file ending. You would have been wondering why you kept getting a white background. Davina and Caroline

Hi Rcketmanzero - sorry to hear you are having a problem.
If you are wanting to save a 'master' file so you can change it later, go to File >>Save. The Dialogue box will ask you to name the file & select the place to save.
It'll be saved in a svg format. To save in png (you can't save in jpeg), you'd need to export the Bitmap, save and then Export, as all explained in video.
If you still have a problem, perhaps you could do a short video using Jing

Hi, thanks for contacting us. Fear not, you have saved your work and you can carry on working with the file. For some reason Windows7 puts Internet Explorer's icon instead of Inkscape. I am going to give you the url for the video that shows you how to open the file but it will be in a message because YouTube do not allow urls in this posting. Regards, Davina and Caroline

I am also having problems saving a 'master' file. Every time that I save it in a .svg or any other file type, it does not save as an inkscape icon but rather as an internet explorer icon. I am not sure why. I cannot continue my unfinished work. Please advise...

Hi there Ellen - yes, the dratted IE is behind the times, I'm afraid. We can't put links on the comments here, so I'm going to PM you with it, or you could search on our channel for Inkscape and Windows - it's called How to open an Inkscape file using Windows 7 - Inkscape Tutorial .
Or instead of double clicking on the Inkscape icon, try right clicking, going down to 'Open with' and you should find Inkscape there. See what happens.

ok im going nuts! i cant get inkscape downloaded on my macbook, so im using my window 7 pc and now ints doing the explorer thing. and its not giving me the open with...inkscape option! can you help with getting inkscape on my mac or what do i do if its not letting me to open with... inkscape??? Thanks, for the tutorial. I have a When saving inkscape as an svg (inkscape) it saves as the E (windows explorer). Do you know if there is a fix for this issue?

Missy E here. So I try to save in Inkscape following Caroline's instructions in tut 3. but my file ended up as a Explorer page. How did that happen? What did I do wrong. I'm using windows 7 64bit. I'd like to save the work I have so I can continue working on it later. BTW, the file extension did say Inkscape.svg.

I have a problem. I did a line portrait and when I export it as a png the image never shows up because lines are black and the background is also black. What do I do about that? I have just started and the line portrait is my first project. I really want to show what I’ve done but I don’t see the image.

Hi, I use the Inkscape software to convert files into eps format for vinyl cutting purpose. Many times the files cannot be saved as eps and the cutter software is unable to open them. Do you know what is wrong?

Interesting question. When saving your work as a png you MUST Export it not Save. (See 3.06 on the above video.)
If you want to print it out I suggest Save As(not exporting) a pdf. Make sure the dpi is 300. Take a look at our tutorial - 'Saving your created Graphic in Inkscape on Windows - Inkscape Tutorial Video 8' - 5.32 mins.
I have created a neon graphic and was able to print png and pdf. Good luck. Davina
