Counterfeit computer chips can find their way into the supply chains of everyday products and are often difficult to identify. Researchers at the UConn Center for Hardware Assurance, Security and Engineering (CHASE) are developing some of the world's most innovative methods for determining if a computer chip is counterfeit.

These are reused chips, formerly referred to as "gray market" because it's not exactly clear it's illegal to reuse a chip. If it's remarketed as brand new (e.g. counterfeit packaging), that's black market. If it's sold as an aftermarket chip, like a used car part, it's perfectly legal. Industry is making an effort to change "gray market" to "counterfeit" in order to close off the potential that secondhand markets are legitimate. It's planned obsolescence in hindsight.

There are several clues in this video that the chips identified as counterfeit are actually reused, or possibly factory seconds. I've never seen footage of an actual fake chip printing machine.

Less marketing, more information please. There's a reason people hate these kinds of videos that pretend to be informational, but serve as a marketing tool only.
