Paul Biya gone missing - Cameroon citizens demand proof their 91 year old president is alive

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has not been seen or heard from in over a month. He was last spotted in China during the China-Africa summit four months ago. Since then, the 91-year-old has not attended meetings where he had been expected, including the United Nations General Assembly and the recently organized International Organization of La Francophonie summit in Paris, France. This has led to swirling rumours that Paul Biya is dead and top Cameroonian officials are trying to hide this information. As a result, many Cameroonian citizens are taking to social media to demand proof of life for their president, amid contrasting opinions on the true state of Paul Biya’s health and whether he is alive at all.
Biya is the world's oldest leader. The nonagenarian has controlled Cameroon for over four decades, and his followers have held public protests calling on him to run in the October 2025 elections, but he has not announced if he will run for president again. Biya, who is known for frequent trips to Europe, is known to be sick but no details have been shared with the general public. It is highly unusual for the president to not be seen and heard from in a month. And so on Tuesday, September 8th, 2024, social media reports began to circulate that the president was dead, but there were no details as to where and when the long-serving leader allegedly passed away. Numerous Cameroonians say they do not think their president is alive. "He is our president, and if there is something wrong with him, we have the right to know," said Gloria Wirkom, a businessperson in the capital Yaounde. "So we are pleading with the government of Cameroon to let us know the health state of our president, she added." "We are asking the government to prove to us where he is," said another citizen, Akongnwi Neba. "We need to know his whereabouts, whether he is alive or dead. It is our right as citizens of the country to know where our president is."
