I speak with my dad a lot about the state of affairs today. He worked for the State Department during the Carter years, and also served in Vietnam. The “misunderstanding” of what happened at Kursk has to do with misunderstanding the character of war in these regions. During the Great Patriotic War, where there were many more troops involved, huge swathes of land went unguarded. What made the Stalingrad encirclement so easy (3 days to Kalach) was that the German southern wing consisted of a single division, the 16th Motorized at Elista, which was responsible for 300 km of frontline. And to the north there were no German troops at all, only poor-quality allied formations, the equivalent to the troops originally guarding Kursk. The American Civil War also had the same character, where the South entered the North unopposed in 1862 and 1863, ending in the battles of Antietam & Gettysburg. When distances are so long, the fighting takes on the character of a Naval War more than anything else. The only thing that matters in such a war is "vessels sunk", but the Western press has turned "miles sailed" as an indicator of victory and foisted that on a militarily illiterate public. The fact that the Spanish Armada circumnavigated England was immaterial. Napoleon also fell into the same trap in 1812 when he "arrived" in Moscow with nothing to show for it. The US leaves its borders undefended for the same reason, it would be ludicrous for an enemy to land 8 brigades in California or Alaska.
