There is a huge difference - the search!! most of the heavy duty search work is done by Google...we don't search in SO, we search in Google and Google directly opens the SO question link! hence not much load on SO servers!!

Stack overflow has the advantage of every new post being deleted because someone asked the question 15 years ago and got a vague answer that the moderators said "Works for me" and marked sticky.

It's important to mention that Stack Overflow doesn't have very complex functionality

They put SO together in 2008 and said: "This will do fine in the next decades", and then it actually did

The take away is that if you have a ludicrious ammount of money, you can have a simple setup and not worry about the overspend on compute resources you aren't actively using.

Microservices benefit is in having smaller teams being able to deploy, not performance.

Amazing work, Can you please help us with the comparison of STACKOVERFLOW and DISCORD? can understand STACKOVERFLOW doesn't have messaging issues, BUT STILL could DISCORD have benefited from monolithic structure? Your quick BUT on point video will help us.

One reason they’ve gotten away with such a simple architecture could also be due to the simple application it’s self. While serving 1.4 billion views and supporting edits, comments and maybe a few other features, there is little to no integration with other apps or services. Micro service architecture does well in environments that demand flexibility and have to integrate with 3rd parties. If an equally sized entity in the industry asked to integrate some features or had some requests for implementing shared behavior I would imagine they wouldn’t add that to their monolith. At least, I wouldn’t.

I mean SO is as simple as it gets. Mostly read operations that are easy to cached since hardly anyone every comment/reply due to their toxic system

It’s simple because their business is simple. It’s a read heavy search engine to the external users.
