Should Missouri be called "Misery" for all the depressing places within the state? Some people think so. The Show Me State has plenty of good communities where the residents can be happy, but it also has an abundance of truly horrible cities and towns where the people are miserable, poor, and dealing with insane crime rates that would make any normal person want to escape. In this video, we're uncovering eight communities that are the worst of the worst within the state of Missouri.

It's interesting how someone simply looking at statistics can get such a skewed view of an area. For starters, the "poverty". What you failed to mention was that rural Missouri has an EXTREMELY low Cost of Living. You can live at or below the notional poverty line, and lead a very comfortable life. Crime. Nearly all of towns that you mentioned have a very "targeted" style of crime. Like literally everywhere in America, we have a drug problem, so there are random crimes, mostly property crimes. And the vast majority of violent crimes are between drug users. Springfield has a TERRIBLE "problem" with violent crime right now. But if you are not a drug user, you can walk down 99% of the streets after dark, and you have nothing to worry about. Crime there is not random. Its not racial. Its addicts. Joplin is the same way. It is an Interstate town, and drugs are rampant.
If there is anything inherently "wrong" with rural Missouri, is that it is BORING. But, conversely, it is peaceful. If you like wildlife, or rivers and lakes, camping, hunting, fishing ... you will love it. If you like concerts (I do, by the way), you will be driving to KC or StL ... and hoping you don't get randomly shot.

Thank you for the video. Not mentioning big cities keeps people going to them and not here where we don't want city slickers.

Many years ago when I was a kid growing up in Springfield there were streetcars and there was a real nice zoo and it was very safe. Bummer that it has declined! Thanks for sharing and the best of luck!

Seems like all of these towns are in the southern part of Missouri.

I have lived in Springfield for 40 years. Graduated from MSU. Raised a family. Had a great Job. Made lots of money. Retired and living the Ozark Outdoor dream. I have never had one issue with crime. I know it exists but it pails in comparison to St. Louis or KC. I lived In St. Louis for 6 years. If you want crime, pollution, poverty, angry people and traffic move to the big city. Yes you can have lots of amenities, shopping, culture, music and sports. But don't get mugged or robbed on your way out. i guess YouTube videos like these are actually good for Springfield. People can move to the big cities instead and live their dream.. Good luck out there. ✌

I used to know someone from Aurora. He didn't have any good things to say about it, and that was in the 1980s when the crime rate was a lot lower. Springfield has lower than average incomes, but also the cost of living there is a lot lower than most cities its size.

Missouri is one of the states that I would consider moving to. Thank you for another heads up :)

If you go to lamberts you will there after say throwed. And I just bought retirement property just outside of Poplar Bluff...so I could be within an hour of lamberts, (not the only reason but it did figure into the mix).
Mind you, ANYTHING is better than Illinois.

I moved from Lee county Florida well over a decade ago because of drugs and crime getting out of control...to Macon Missouri. After a year of getting accustomed...I love it here !

Do you know that if you own a home in Missouri and receive any monetary assistance of any sort from the state . . . reduced taxes on property for the elderly, is one that will have the state control the disposition of your home . . . That's right. You die . . . The state sells your home . . . The state gets their money they assisted you with back and then the rest goes to your probate.
Puts a new twist on that phrase "Show me the money"

I know people that moved to Springfield and they loved it versus where they used to live. They had moved back for family reasons.

The moral of the story here is don't live near an interstate. All of these cities are on either 44 or 55. You can commit a crime, get on the interstate and disappear in minutes. Also interstates are used for trafficking in all manner of illegal things/activities and they bring the types that participate.

I live in SW Missouri and love my area. Good friends, loyal neighbors, and a rich culture. It's home! The only downside for me is having to drive so far to get anything because we live in the boonies

I live in Springfield, of course I feel I should mention its on the south side where all the old people live. But I definitely wouldn't say this place is dangerous, yes there are parts of town that are sketchy but a majority of people aren't going into those areas on a regular basis. I do feel there is a pretty high number of homeless people here, anywhere you go in town you are going to see someone pushing a cart full of junk, or someone holding up a sign on a corner, or if you work near the county jail like me you see a lot of inmates that just got released walking down the street. There is quite a bit of drugs happening in town too. But I would much rather live here than in KC or St. Louis

I was born and spent my early childhood in Springfield. Later in life, I lived in Joplin and worked out of Carthage. Not a big fan of any of them, but Joplin is the best of the 3, in my experience.
